Great Players Stan Getz - Voyage

I've never read any biographies about him yet but would like to, simply because of his music.

Dave Gelly reads from his biography of Getz on this recording:

Which is available on Spotify!

It seems clear the man wasn't as sweet as his music.

As someone said (might have been Ronnie Scott): "Stan? A peculiar bunch of people"

Yes, i've heard the same.. I still haven't read a biography.. but when I watch him play, i'm mesmerised and taking note of how he works his embouchure and what he does with his hands to create this wonderful sounding music.

I notice that Stan Getz "chirps" an awful lot, it surprises me that he couldn't control that. I have started to have problems with chirping myself recently, in the past it didn't happen so much. Then today I read this in a discussion about him:

Actually you'd be more likely to chirp on a refaced piece with thin rails than you would on a stock Tone Edge with wider tip rails.
I'm playing an old and quite battered Otto Link (alto) mouthpiece, I'm wondering all of a sudden if that is the cause of the chirping. And what about this "thin rails" idea?

And what about this "thin rails" idea?
Some refacers/makers swear to it. Allegedly they improve articulation.
Thinnest rails coming to mind were on my Guardalas. I am not a big fan. Mouthpieces often get reed unfriendly.

I know about at least one Getz gig at Ronnie's where he was 1 hour late because he could not find the right reed.

How funny... I actually like those funny little squeaks as I thought they punctuated the music perfectly.. I thought they were intentional and just part of the charm!

I usually have my phone on random play in the car and this track came up yesterday. It's from an album called "Tour's End" by Oscar Peterson and Stan Getz, with Ray Brown and Herb Ellis in 1957. Who knew Stan Getz could play the blues like this ?

Although the YouTube clip calls it "Blues for Herky" my download says "Blues for Henry".

Hi @rhysonsax thanks for posting this I hadn't heard it before, nice. I had heard this one though I had it on a collection of jazz blues cd now long gone Doh.

I have a Cd with both "Bronx Blues" and " Blues for Herky" on it.

It is stan getz with Oscar Peterson, ray Brown and Herb ellis on Guitar.

Fantastic Cd which you can pick up for buttons, and is well worth having. great grooves.
Mine is STAN GETZ WITH OSCAR PETERSON TRIO, on Verve. I think the original version.

interestingly, all 11 tracks were done on one day.

Both of those blues are credited as composed by Getz. I dont hear that. I hear a jam on a 12 bar blues !!!

Getz feels very comfortable in this idiom.
