Great Players Stan Getz - Voyage

Ronnie Cuber for me ( Bari ) . As for ole Stan: well, some fabulous stuff, also some real bilge. All the Bossa stuff ? It made him a very wealthy man. Frankly I cannot listen to it. His tone, no dispute, marvellous. I was once shown how to get that sound. It is a specific emb. Sure, it's only a party trick, but it sounds great ( when it works lol ) s

Any musician that is distinguishable from the others in every song you hear has achieved something that most of us only imagine.

Stan getz was a revolutionary musician that is a huge influence for many many musicians saxophonists or not.

And if the ability to subtone the while range of a sax and keep being intersting as a musician is a party trick then i want to spend my life in that party 🙂

My cafesaxophone NS soul special is this one :

Dedicated to Jeanette the soprano diva of the forum 🙂

There's an active NS community of young and old here in Athens, and we just formed a band trying to recreate a sound that could be described as northern soul. This is so much more challenging than my gospel, jazz years as a hammond organist. There are so many different elements in playing and producing this kind of music that make it quite a challenge. Its so easy to sound canned .... I ll be playing tenor and bari. In case we record something i ll post something here.

May be worth starting a new thread on this : )

Yes. I've never been able to warm to either of them very much. I can admire their playing, but not really love it. All a matter of taste, of course.
Is it the playing or the music? Many would find this album 'muzak' like but surely the playing can't be faulted?
A similar example from the trumpet world is Wynton Marsalis who made an album with strings.(as did Parker) The playing was impeccable but it was an extremely boring album. It was a display of smooth technique and all the tracks sounded the same.

The playing. It's not a question of faulting anything. I can tell they're both great players but they just don't speak to me very directly. I completely get that they do speak that way to others.

Now there's a player I really don't like. Superb technician but comes over cold as ice. Odd when his brother's playing has so much warmth and fun in it (at least, it feels that way to me). But then, I'm not much like my brother (I hope >:)).

It's more of a show you thing Nick. PM me sometime, I'll try explain it. Nothing too odd but I don't need half the forum on my case because they can't play a la Stan in four hours. lol ade

Why did I mention this? On a serious note, I don't want to mislead folk into thinking they can play like Stanley. I may do it later; give it some thought. So; this teacher Kev ? Subtones aside, are you satisfied with what he is teaching you? The big question; do you still need a teacher Kev ? Best. ade

Good question but as I think even some of who we think of as our pro and very good players I am sure will admit they are still learning, there is never a time when you don't need a teacher, whether it be formal lessons, informal discussion or from the written word or listening to certain players. If you are learning and progressing it is just a matter of having the right teacher for that point in your journey 🙂
