To add an alto...?

I think Pete would agree that a Hanson 5 or 8 would 'blow away' any Yamaha below the 62 (and probably give that a run for its money, although I know how well thought-of the 62 is, and its better re-sale value).

I shall certainly be looking at the SA-6 (MkVI 'clone') when it eventually appears (hopefully in the Springtime), although it will be a *long* time before I really 'outgrow' my 5 🙂

I started in May 07 as well, ( had 4 saxes so far) and got a baritone to complement my alto. So my advice would be..........go for it.
We just got (last week) my daughter a brass/phosper Trumpet from gear4music and both her teacher and our band teacher think its great. We didnt tell them the cost so they thought it was great on its own merits.
I have a Hanson SA8 which I love and a Walstein bari which had an issue but was sorted so quickly and painlessly it was untrue.

So let us know which you get 😉

Col.

1) No, you don't need it, you don't want it and you won't like it (perhaps).

2) I had an alto but my passion didn't take off until I got a sexy tenor. The alto is a pretend saxophone for the finnicky brigade -- those that can't play a soprano but lack the bravado to blast out with a tenor, bum notes and all!!

3) Don't do it, go the other way and buy a bari then give it to me and then buy one for yourself.

Moz, in fun only.

PS Or you could just ignore everyone and buy what you want (but see (3) above).

It must be something in the air as I am looking at adding either a Walstein soprano or tenor to my Hanson SA-8 alto which incidentally I am very very pleased with . 😛

Rhys - I think there are other differences between the Walstein and the G4M. The octave mech looks different for a start (Walstein conventional, G4M underslung).

Rhys - Please ignore the above; I must need my eyes testing! In fact, finish apart, the horns do look very similar on the surface. Whether there are other differences (materials, springs, pads, setup (or lack thereof), etc.) would be interesting to know.

Bad news on the YAS62. It's lost a good bit of lacquer (not important), leaks quite a lot (fixable), might need some other work (possible repad, still do-able)...

....and they want around ?600.

Given that immaculate ones are going on ebay for c. ?625 - ?750, new ones are ?1029 (if you look hard enough) and the work needed would probably be over a hundred (at least) I've told them I'm not interested at that price but might be if they come down quite along way.

It's very unlikely that they will so I'm probably back to my original choices.

Never mind, could be worse.

Sound of teeth-sucking over here Frank, I got my 62 which was in pretty good nick all round including fairly new pads for 600, so leaving aside the cosmetic problems of the lacquer loss on the one you are (or probably were) considering, that seems a bit steep to me.

The search must continue though!

It's unfortunate about the 62 series, because they are very good horns, but the good news is there's good to excellent saxes in various price ranges about. Interesting to note, over the last couple of years I have noticed the older 62 series (original model) commanding higher prices second hand than the 62 Mark II series second hand. Look around, blow as many horns as possible, and something is bound to turn up.
Regards,
Greg Strange.

The hour (finally) approacheth...!

Quick question - on tenor (YTS275, JodyJazz HR* 5) I'm using RJS 2M Unfiled. On the soon-to-be-ordered alto (YAS275, Yam 4C) would the same reed (obviously, in an alto size!) be appropriate? Should I get a selection and try a few?

Whaddaya think?

Thanks,

Frank

Take a deep breath, Frank.

Actually, I've been told that the alto requires less lung than the tenor, so I should be in fine shape! Embouchure, on the other hand, might be an issue. Perhaps, "stiff upper lip" might be better advice. Or "stiff lower lip". Or something... 😉

Just placed the order. <wince> If my calendar and their delivery schedule agree (did last time with this firm) then a shiny new YAS275 should be in my hands on Thursday! :w00t:

Thank you. It's on Friday, so hopefully the YAS will continue to distract me to the point where I forget what an old fart I am...!

Lee & Phil - Thanks for the advice, chaps. I stopped by Johnny Roadhouse on the way home and picked up a couple of each of RJS unfiled 2S, 2M and 2H, so hopefully something out of that lot should work and tide me over until I can get some full boxes of the winner.
