Hi all, Ive seen a magazine called Clarinet and Saxophone. Is this still in print, is it available in the uk? Can anyone recommend a magazine for the sax.

Nobody seems to be able to find one at my local shop

Hi Taff, the only journal I know specifically for the saxophone is (surprisingly) called 'Saxophone Journal'. It's not available readily from UK suppliers but is very easy to take out an international subscription.

The publisher is Dorn Publications and you can subscribe online at www.dornpub.com/saxjsub2.html

It's not a pretty web site, but effective.

The journal comes out 6 times a year and is a good read. It is heavily oriented towards the American market, is packed with interviews, playing tips, practice tips, jazz tips and also has a few sections dealing with classical saxophone. There is a repair page, cd reviews, book reviews and every issue comes with a 'masterclass' cd. This is usually in the format of a play-a-long.

The current subscription rate outside the US is 62.5 dollars and strikes me as good value. I enjoy the magazine.

I've picked up a couple of copies from @Borders' when I've been near one, but it tends to be a bit hit and miss.

I have to agree with Greywolf. I have subscribed to this publication (Saxophone Journal) off and on for years, and much of what is now published is geared towards the College bound, Classical Saxophonist. In addition, a vast majority of the content consists of material that has been covered ad nauseum in previous issues.

The magazine was much more useful and informative in years past, with many in depth interviews with legendary horn players, Paul Cohen's excellent articles on various makes and models of horns throughout history etc. The CD training material was of a higher caliber of instruction and instructors years ago as well.
It's a shame really.

Knowing the HEFTY shipping fees for a U.K subscription from the U.S., unless you can sample some copies at the local newsstand, I wouldn't bother.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
