Saxophones Yamaha custom yas82z

@avril
There has been a lot of talk about your OP being a fake and that could be the case but its just as likely its a stolen horn, either one thats been stolen from a private owner or one that has been stolen from a shop(few of those have happened over recent months)try asking for the serial number and some photos and someone on here will be able to tell whether its a fake or maybe if it has been stolen.

These scammers are all over the place. Here on Ebay is a "Selmer Paris Reference 54" alto for only 400USD. What a deal! Not surprisingly, it ships from China, there are misspellings in the ad which labels its pitch as Bb. Look at the bell though. They use the same logo that Selmer does. It's terrible.

France Black Alto Saxophone SELMER 54 E-flat Alto Saxophone Musical Pearl prof. | eBay

This is precisely the problem I'm talking about. Sure, the seller may claim it's a Selmer Reference 54 alto and lure naive buyers into paying $400 US dollars (including free postage), innocently believing that they've got themselves the bargain of a lifetime but... the saxophone they'll actually receive is fake - a low-quality, chinese student-grade horn that's worth $200 at best. Just look at the thick pads on it... Of course the reason sellers run these scams is because they can sell a $200 sax for double the usual price.

What appears on the side of the bell of a saxophone really does matter. Sellers shouldn't be able to trade saxophones under a "false flag". But unfortunately they do.

This fake Selmer even claims it was "Made In France". Yeah, sure. How blatant is that?

Yes, spot on. This is fraud, a very serious crime.

I've never really understood these type of scammers, if they sold these horns under there own name they would still sell them for £399 and probably sell more,as Colin says its a nice finish but most sax players will keep away because we know they are fake.

You know what... I asked a simple question as I know nothing about saxophones. I joined this forum to find out more and over half of your responses have just been taking the "mick". The item in question is not on ebay or any other auction site. it was in the local paper so I went to see it. It looked very nice and he allowed me to take lots of pictures. It is in a case and brand new, the guy said it was a gift and he knew nothing about it which instantly go me suspicious.

With respect, you came here looking for advice and got it.

that advice was that it was either

1) someone who had something valuable but didnt know it.
2) stolen
3) fake

You knew enough about saxes to know that it was a huge bargain. so what more do you want us to say?

If you are comfortable that everything is acceptable to you.......................... buy it.

it is not difficult.

if it were me, I would not go near it, for fear that the police would come knocking at my door.

good luck

I have a fantastic opportunity to own a brand new one and they only want £599. I am a bit suspicious but soooooo tempted

In your opinion !!! i think the responses will have eased anyone’s mind as to whether it’s fake or stolen.

You said it yourself “I’m a bit suspicious” if it was me i wouldn’t be a bit suspicious I’d be ‘hugely’ suspicious !
If you’re comfortable with that ‘cheap’ price then buy it !!
Bargains do come along every now and again.......

Ps. That’s the best copy I’ve ever seen 😛
That’s taking the ‘Mick’

The engraving on the bell looks kind of legit but appears to be laser engraved. I don't know what significance the "D" in the serial number is I would have thought Yamaha serial numbers would just be series of numbers and no letters of the alphabet. Somebody like forum members Steve Howard or Griff who are respected wind instrument repairmen should be able to advise whether the instrument is 'kosher' because they have probably repaired and seen a whole bunch of Custom Yamahas.

I still have Charlie's Nissan Micra if you need to get to gigs with it.

In this list there is one with a 'D':

I think it's a (very good) fake:
the low C/Eb spatulas should be rounded (like on a MK6), not oblong (like on a SA80).
the body to bow ring should be black not gold lacquered.
The neck should have a shield with it's model engraved on it, this one has no shield and the model is laser stamped
The mouthpiece provided with Custom Z is a Yamaha Custom mouthpiece, not a student 4C.
Would be interesting to see the upper part of the sax, if it has the Yamaha trademark rounded front F spatula. The bell engraving doesn't look as refined as on a Yamaha and all the logo/lettering seems... wrong, not sure why (maybe it should be engraved?)..

So in short, from the photos, I'm confident it is not a Yamaha Custom Z. This doesn't mean it will not play and perform well, just that you are not getting a professional level horn at a knocked down price and consider it may be extremely difficult to sell on.
Cheers,
M.

If you are selling what looks like an expensive item the first thing you do is research it so you get the best possible price, this guy hasn't done So, it makes me think he knows it's a fake and is just chancing his luck, your choice if you buy it, it is lovely looking but might play/sound rubbish.

@avril
You asked for info and you got it.
It is a fake Yamaha,if you buy this at £599 you will have been done, but thats upto you.
Black Yamaha's don't have a gold bow ring and as MMM has said its the wrong mouthpiece it should be a custom and not a 4c basic.
Go onto the Yamaha saxophone site you will probably spot other differences.
You have to understand that in the saxophone world something that is too good to be true usually means someone wants to scam you, no one gives anything away.

Avril, I think you've made a very wise decision to post your concerns here. The vast majority of answers here have, potentially, saved you the pain of spending £600 on a worthless, possibly poorly playing Saxophone. These same members, if you so wish, will be able to provide further information on what to look out for and what legitimate models might be more suitable to spend your hard earned cash on.

If you stick around the forum you will no doubt realise that all threads have the potential to branch off into, let's face it, nonsense 😵 :tongue-out: at times. :sax:Play on!

Please don't be offended, our members are like a large family, there are the serious ones, the mickey takers, the nurturing ones, grumpy ones....... the list goes on, you just haven't been around long enough to get to know them yet. I hope when you do get your sax you visit often as you will get lots of good advice as you have above.

Most threads veer off topic and attract a certain amount of ribbing, it is not personal and not done to offend or upset, it's part of the café atmosphere and what makes it special.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
