Trevor James Horn or Yamaha YTS275?

Who is this guy Trevor James anyway.
Is he perhaps related to Clive James ? If so his horns would have good bottom notes.
Perhaps he is related to Sid James , what a carry on,regardless!!
Maybe he a a descendent of King James: dont mention the Battle of the Boyne.
Perhaps he is a descendent of Jesse James or his brother Frank : if he is ,then his horns should be outlawed !

Ken Aust ( Jameson ) I'll drink to that.

I gave my teacher a blow of my TJ Signature last night. He said, and he emphasised that is is only his opinion, that it was generally fine. The only problem that he found was that very low notes didn't come easy. This was interesting to me as I thought that it was just me! He said that it would be ok to keep it when my rental period was up, but, he did say that I might get on better with a secondhand YT32/475/62 for a similar sort of budget.

Well, I just ordered the Yamaha. Heard great things about both but decided to go with the more renowned build quality and the instrument that would perhaps hold it's value more if he ever upgrades.
Thank you all very much for the advice (except Ken Aust - there's always one 😛 )

I hope the Yamaha goes down well, Jay. Seeing and holding your saxophone for the first time, wondering how you'll ever get a note out of something so complicated and arcane-looking, yet somehow hypnotically beautiful, is a special and magical moment. 🙂

Cheers, Bob

Took back my TJ to the shop today, felt that the low notes didn't come too well. My teacher thought that this was the case too. Probably just a feature of the particular individual horn that I had. I am waiting for an old Yani that I bagged which might suit better and may match my alto too. It didn't cost much so if I have to sell it on I won't really lose out too much apart from the hassle..

Hey there Jay,

I don't think you can really go wrong with a Yamaha for a beginner's instrument.

Cutting a long story short, I have play-tested both trevor james and yamahas. I found nothing wrong with either of them. I thought the TJs had a little more character to the sound than the yamaha student models and consequently, bought the TJ.

No complaints. I may not have it for the rest of my life, but I wouldn't by any stretch describe it as a POJ.

In terms of resale value, I think you have a better bet with the Yamaha, given their worldwide reputation for reliability and solidity.

Either way, I would be seriously chuffed if someone bought me a saxophone.

Great gift

Hi Jay,

speaking from a repairers point of view, yamaha spares are easier to come by than Trevor James. Both have a good reputation - I have owned both in my time and either would make a great present. - one make I could highly recommend is Jupiter - a little cheaper than the yamaha and TJ but fantastic design builld and great quality/value for money.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
