SOTM SOTM Theme December 2021 - Winter

Hello!

Here's a song from a list of arrangements I used to play with my students at advent markets. I stopped because intontation is not so easy at -5 degrees and sometimes people were shocked the songs did not sound the way they expected them to sound 🙂

But as we have Omicron instead of advent markets.....

In the UK, that's the melody of the Labour Party Anthem - "The Red Flag":
The People's Flag is deepest red,
It shrouded oft our martyred dead, . . .

Played impeccably as always.

Hello!

I hope there's no hidden message in this one 🙂

A friend of mine from the German forum made a mouthpiece, it's a kind of Slant Link.
He named it "Big Wave". It comes in only one tip opening (.108).

I admit that I ordered it first just to support him, but it's very useable for me. It's easy to play despite of the tip opening (reeds Rigotti Jazz 3). I can play it with students, in ensembles without drowning out the other instruments.

I hope you like the recording, it's not perfect, but Dolly couldn't stay quiet..

No hidden message implied in "O Tannenbaum" either. 🙂

Excellent, as always.

It's all a bit Christmassy here, so how about something bleak and wintry ?

Hoagy Carmichael wrote a very sad song called "Winter Moon" with these sad lyrics:

Winter moon, up there alone in the sky
All I can hear is the word "Goodbye"
Winter moon, do you recall a night in June?
Where is love's magic? Where has it gone?
Has it gone like the summertime that we used to know
Winter moon, up there alone in the sky
Are you as lonely tonight as I?

Art Pepper recorded a great alto version in 1980 with strings arranged and conducted by Bill Holman. That recording is very slow (about 55 bpm) and I couldn't afford a string orchestra, so I made a BiaB backing with a nice vibraphone RealTrack.

I like the soprano playing of Jim Galloway, Scottish born and Canada based mainstream saxophonist. He recorded a fine version of Winter Wonderland on the Sackville label which I have transcribed and tried to learn. It is too rapid for me at the recorded tempo (about 164bpm) so I made a BiaB backing at 145bpm with one of their Real Style Gypsy Jazz groups.

Very convincing - sounds great.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
