SOTM SOTM November 24 TWNBAY

I was kindly asked to host the November edition of SOTM and to that end I offer the following song ‘There Will Never Be Another You’
A well known standard that offers a horn friendly key in its usual format.
Lots of 251’s major and minor for a good workout.
I’ve included in my Dropbox attachment the Bb and Eb Real Book versions plus one backing track. Also a few versions with sax solo transcriptions by well known players and the Scofield contrafact ‘Not You Again’ with Kenny Garrett.
Lots of other backing tracks on YT or make your own as I have done and I’ll upload my version soon.
Do it how you want to.
Up/mid/ballad etc
And as much as I like to see/hear your favourite versions by other players the one I most want to hear is YOUR version😎
I know the SOTM doesn’t get a lot of action (3 players on last months one including me😳) but it would be great to hear your playing as well as your opinions on various sax related topics.
If you don’t want any feedback just say so.
If you do I’m happy to offer whatever I can and I’m sure others will chip in too.

Looking forward to any contributions and please excuse the early up load but I’m in NZ and I’m busy tomorrow😎

Kind regards to all.

Alex

Thanks Alex, I've been telling myself to do a SOTM for a while, it's time for less telling and more doing. Not to mention this is a tune I've practiced before. So I'll give it a go.
Now that’s what I was hoping to hear 😎 I really appreciate it. Looking forward to your playing🙏

As promised my version.

Done as a ballad.

I’ve used the formant filter on the alto for a couple of choruses the other 2 au naturelle.

If you don’t like fx on horns step away now😎

I can upload it to hear this.at if anyone has problems accessing it on SC

Thanks for listening if you have time😎

Alex

That’s great Matt. I’m hearing the changes in your soloing and bass lines. I’m not particularly bothered by the video quality in fact I’d be happy with just audio (I stopped reading books with pictures many years ago🤣) but that’s a very good start to the proceedings and I hope others will feel inspired to join us 😎

Over on the other site there was a discussion started by @mrblackbat on why more people didn't post stuff on the monthly song threads. Lack of confidence when improvising and lack of decent recording equipment/not comfortable using backing tracks were some of the things that people felt were barriers.

So...here is me just playing the tune, in my kitchen, into my horrible mobile phone mic using the standard voice recorder app.

Great SP we just need the improv bit which I’m sure you are more than capable of and in terms of the recorded sound from a phone it’s really quite good. I can certainly get a good feel for your personal sound although I already know it from your Strasbourg recording. Any chance you might give us the full version? I hope so🙏

Re hearing the changes: definitely progress then, as this wasn't the case a year ago.

Playing bass lines is fun, and definitely helps to drill in the changes, and voice leading options. Definitely recommend it to folk who haven't tried it!

Absolutely hoping to post something longer and more polished later in November - but I've always been curious about whether posting a more 'raw' recording like that might encourage people who don't usually participate to dip their toes into the water.

100% agree.

There is absolutely no need for a pro level audio recording. It’s neither needed or expected (at least from me😎) I’ll take whatever you’ve got and treat it with respect😎

Will listen to both your takes tomorrow; glad you did a phone take SP! That thread on SotW ended up being quite frustrating for various reasons, not least that many folk who wanted to criticise still didn't put their reed where their mouth is and record something....

Amen to that😎

There are a lot of people on that site where I think if they spent more time practicing and less time trying to stir up arguments, they might even get some gigs 😉

We've had an encouraging start this month though - 3 submissions and we're not even into November yet!

Very enjoyable listen (also I think the filter sounds good!).

For the record it doesn't sound bad at all (more proof that it's the player and not the equipment that makes the sound 🙂 )

Sorry the video quality is a bit naff, didn't set up my lights.

Great performance! Also no one who reads this in the future will understand why the dark video totally worked with all these bats flying around on the screen, but it's their loss... 😉

The effects are starting to warm on me! Though still prefer it when the unaffected sound comes in and your beautiful tone shines through.

Beautiful playing, and I like the arrangement; is the piano a sample? There's a quality where it sounds like a loop is stopping and restarting with it that I really like, every so slightly glitch. And I'd love to know what you use for drums.

Playing wise, everything one would expect, there's a line where you switch to quarter notes I think (would need to listen again) that really caught my ear - it was beautiful and the change in rhythmic tempo worked so well.

Love it!

Nice time here! Sounds great (phone recordings really aren't terrible at all so long as you can tweak any limiting/gain they have and position the phone away) and the natural room sound of your kitchen is better than mine!

And this is a perfect example of showing that just little bits of improvisation, or embellishment, are a great way to get started: it's recognisably TWMBAY but with your stamp on.

Great stuff, and I really hope it encourages more people to post!

I have an old 2018 version to share:

This was also one of the first tunes I ever recorded myself with a backing-track and USB mic back in 2010, when I started attending TOTM threads on SOTW. Didn't know much about recording and mixing, which can be clearly heard in this 2010 version:

Don't have the option anymore to create new home recordings.
Sounds just fine and dandy to me Peter. Shame about having no chance to record more. One day maybe?
