Does the distance between the tone hole and the pad/key vary from sax to sax ? Looking at the F to D keys on my trevor james alto the key distance increments from roughly half a centimetre through to a centimetre. It strikes me that if the pads sat uniformly nearer the holes the action would be a lot quicker/easier, but I dont know if this fact or fantasy. Anybody got any views?

Cheers
Chad

Hi Chadders - There's a topic in this section called "Pad Clearance", by Fipper

(Cups ear and puts on Aussie accent,

"What's that you say Flipper? You want to know about Pad Clearance?")

The answers you seek may be found there.

All the Best,

Or do you mean that when you look at the keys on an alto the right hand keys sit directly on the pad cups, but when you play baritone only the middle finger is on a pad cup?

If yes, yes. If no see above.

Here's a link to an excellent website for info on sax acoustics as well as info on all kinds of other instrument acoustics.

These lads don't seem to do anything else, nary a mention of cracking annava tube of Fosters, bonkin ma'Sheilas or surf's up on Bondai Beach.
