Saxophones Case refurbishment

I did this case renovation a while back. A few pictures posted here and there but nothing of the complete build.
Sometimes there are no options for a aftermarket replacement case. So this is what happens when you try to restore what you have. It’s very time consuming but in this case (pun intended )worth it.

This is a case to a 1933-ish H. Bettoney metal clarinet. Initial inspection it looked like it just needed a few spots of glue.

I’ve never done a complete overhaul of a case before. Previously I’ve had some success relining the interior of a flute case.

I’ve had extensive formal training in cabinet furniture/Millworks. Originally the trade I planned my future for. Things change. This project is well within my comfort zone. I actually started to giggle because this was just stupid. I’m only doing this because I can and need the case. I already know this is going to be 50 hours of work.

Returning to picture archive is could see one corner shaved a tad. The part holds in by pressure fit. Turned it around and all was fine.

Material over hinge works fine On closing.

Inside top bell area I stuffed and added double layer of fabric.

Bit late now, but it did occur to me that it would be fun to slip a small note, somewhere under the lining, with your name, date, something on the cases priors... You never know, in another few decades someone else might renovate it...
Fun idea ! Message can be added no problem! Great suggestion ! Thanks :thumb:

Covering the tray frame was almost boring. Cut rectangle oversize. Glue in few areas. Shoehorn into bottom tucking cloth in aroune edges. Add stuffing in bell area and cover.

Not much to see.

Good thing I kept up on checking fit & measurements. Another 1mm smaller in inside length wouldn’t have been good. It’s a relaxed net fit.

Not perhaps like the messages I've left under wallpaper mostly inspired by haunting and horror movies.

A great looking case deserves a shiny, refurbished horn
And so it begins :optimistic:

I have been speaking to @PigSquealer about his great work.
I had a simple task to complete of re-attaching some inner lining to the frame of my Selmer case.
But keen not to ruin the soft touch of the fabric I enlisted his help and said I would attach pics here as I can't do that in 'Conversations".
So simple as it may seem....
I really appreciate the help and the edges of the fabric aren't turned back on themselves to form a hem but thats obviously in keeping and sympathetic with its original build.
Thank you!!
