Saxophones Andy Sheppard limited edition saxophone ??

Very nice horn Davey.

What's the difference between the standard RAW Custom Signature and the Andy Sheppard model besides Andy Sheppard's signature? Is there some sort of construction difference e.g. bore side, etc.

Greg S.

The difference is ALOT, completely different beasts. The Sheppard horn was from the drawing board to Andy. Went through different necks to andys spec, different bells and angles, different metal mixes etc etc. The ergos are of course also to his spec. The pearls are like nothing I've seen. There flat and rubbed to a matt finish and are very large. The bell flair is very big and more like a brass instrument kind of shape. As Jim Cheek says in the sax.co.uk review of which he bought the AS sax straight after that is the difference is in the detail. I sat and looked at the horn, keys, posts etc. There so well made, you can see theres been a lot of prep and filing , shaping etc etc.. As I keep saying it feels very special and looks it in person. I think Yamaha have the best ergonomics in the world, well I did until I got this baby. Its perfect. Enough of that now. Right theres the sound and I love it.

I did that with my Yani...... I guessed I couldn't go wrong with it and I was right!! :thumb:

I did it with Davey's 62 really though more on reputation than by pics , any horn being sold by someone who's owned the Z range, Customs, MkVIs, Purple Logos , Yanis, whatever and chose it over a shopful of hi-end horns including more of the above, part-exed a Yani 992 for it and then said it was to be his LAST horn, It has got to be a pretty special horn ! - that it took a 5 grand Sheppard Autograph to prise it from his grip kinda says it all .............. Also I`ve played a 62 Mk1 Tenor and a 61 Purp so cheated really but it was a while back and have the Mk3 Alto .

Yep I really had no plans of letting the silver lady go. I had said I would always keep her even when getting a new horn which I thought was a Z again but the lure of the TOON model popped out the blue again and I had to move very fast so needs must. The silver 62 is a VERY special horn and I tested it with a lot of horns over a couple of intense hours testing. The 62 just sang sooooo well and ticked every box plus some more. Enjoy the silver lady.

It was my intention to get the MKVII completely rebuilt and de-Laquered and use the BW whilst this was happening but again, out of the blue your 62 showed up and replaced the both of them giving me a more flexible horn than the VII with no need for a backup . some things are meant to be. I can`t see you wanting another Z with the sheppard (though I can`t see what one would have over this 62 to be honest unless the keywork is slicker)

Z ergos are the same really. Was wanting a bare brass UL Z really, only for the choice and finish. After getting in some debt for the AS sax I will be just getting a yam 61 tenor in time I think. For the price really. But a long way off yet. No plans/hurry. I'm just going to enjoy my new horn like yourself. 2 happy chaps we are.

Took a trip to Sax.co.uk down in Sussex this afternoon. Originally it was to try the clear plastic Vibrato (incredibly light to hold, bit of a toy, didn't buy it). Jules encouraged me to play the RAW (Silver Plate), RAW-XS and the Andy Sheppard limited edition tenors. I had never played a Trevor James horn before.

They were all good blowing and sounding tenors, all played in tune for me and I liked the flexible sound. The keywork was very positive - no slop at all. I normally like silver saxes, but in this case the XS was a bit better. The Andy Sheppard looked nicer than the (to me) ugly brown RAW finish and also played a bit nicer too. The pearls seemed almost domed (rather than dished) but were actually quite comfortable for me. But I wouldn't pay £5k for it.

Not sure about the target market for the Andy Sheppard Limited Edition. But whilst I was at the showroom, I also had a quick blow on some other top or the range tenors from Selmer, R&C, Yanagisawa. There definitely seems to be a price point around £5k for these top instruments, each with its own features.

There has certainly been a lot of inflation over the last few years for these top horns (and probably the rest of the range too): I payed less than £2k for a new limited edition Keilwerth SX90R about ten years ago. That's an annual inflation rate of 10% when normal retail inflation has been about 2 or 3%.

The world's gone mad !

I have recently bought a RAW and had the chance to look at Andy Shepard one whilst I did not get to blow it it felt very similar I would find it difficult to spend 5k on a new sax when I could get Selmer Balanced Action or Mark 6. for under that price. You would only need to find a good tech and have a repad and set up which would cost about £300.00-£400

(in reference to the OP) You have to remember that Davey is a Pro Sax player in the truest sense of the word - it pays his bills - and the Sheppard would be far more 100% dependable hammered to death on a day in in day out basis than a 50-70yr old classic regardless as to what tech has looked at it

Yes I agree I have had that the MVs always need looking at if you are using them a lot but I wonder how David Sanborne goes on

I've had 5 MKVI tenors, 1 MKVI alto, loads and loads and loads and loads, etc etc etc of the other top horns. None as good as my Sheppard tenor. Simples.

100% - it`s too easy on forums to get hung up on vintage classics, especially ones as reknown as the MkVI , 10M, 6M, S20 etc and lose site of the fact that there are other options which are far better for full time Professional duties and may actually sound better - and not necessarily a 5 grand Sheppard, EG:- I love 10Ms as much as the next blues/rocker but I`d far rather do a tour with a humble workhorse YTS-62 , SA80 or TJ RAW

Why not play your favourite vintage horn if you like the 10M sound for example and have a YTS as a backup. If you do a cruise you would have a back up horn anyway.
The best of both worlds.

Ac
Why does the 62 need to be the back up.
Actually I said YTS could be 32. For me in that situation I would have my 10M as my regular and the 32 that I just sold would be the back up.

PS. Doesn't need to be a YTS. Could be any good modern student horn. Ie. the contrast.
