Zoom H4

Hey Dude,

I am glad to see that you you are up and running. If you have updated to firmware 1.20 then you will be able to use higher than 2GB cards but the cards need to be SDHC cards- from Edirols website 'Responding to demands in the marketplace, the Edirol has recently updated the R-09 to support the new SDHC standard for SD memory cards. Previously, the R-09 was limited to a maximum SD card capacity of 2 gigabytes using standard SD memory cards. As of November 17, 2006 the R-09 is now fully compatible with SDHC memory cards that offer sizes over the 2 GB limit and increased data transfer speeds.'

As to the red led- again if you have updated to 1.20 then under Display settings you scroll down to the Rec/Peak LED menu choice and apparently if you switch this to power save it inks the [REC Indicator] and [PEAK Indicator] to the Display Timer settings. When it goes dark, the [REC Indicator] and [PEAK Indicator] are also turned off.

As to sample rates basically the higher bit rate the better quality (ie more information gets transfered)- very similar to DAB radio. Some people swear by very high bit rates for their MP3- it really depends what you want to do. I personally notice a drop in quality if I compare a full wav file with an MP3 but you proabably wouldn't notice the difference if you didn't set out to do the comparison- I hope that helps.

Yes, and its fun.
I got a 2GB card yesterday which is ample for Mp3, but will probably get one of those SDHC jobbies as well. That will also be nice for storage, when using the Ed as an MP3 player.

Yay, worked out the red LED flash thing according to what you said. Its quite useful to see it flash for a couple of seconds so you know its working, but beyond that I find it too obtrusive.

OK, I'll just use max sample rates to get best quality, and not worry about the subject any further.

Thanks David.

Hi all,

My main interest is in recording live performances of bands I play with - including pit orchestras and for my wife's voice coaching business. I also might play about with multi-tracking myself on my trumpet. So, I wonder how good the quality of the inbuilt mics is. What is your experience please?

Ifyou can get them to put it down as a computer or computer hardware, a good chance of not paying import duty, but VAT is practically unavoidable I believe - that's 17.5% and sometimes there is a commision if the shipping co pay that then bill you.

I've got a Zoom H4 on order. I was particularly attracted to the multi-track facility, which, as far as I can tell, the Edirol does not have. Or have I missed that bit?

Hi beevee,

Sorry, this is an old thread and no one seemed to answer. Was wondering how you got on with the H4?. I bought one a few months ago and think it's great. I like the mic emulations and the bounce down for multitracking.

Saludos,
Ken

Ola Ken,

I find the H4 wonderful! Like to multitrack with, say a midi backing on one track, then playalong on the sax, building up harmonies as we go. I've quite surprised myself like that with the stuff I've tried so far. Of course, you can adjust the pitch of your midi file in Cubase (etc), into your preferred key before you start.

Got myself a few rechargeable AA batteries too - that helps a lot! Time to throw away all those nasty big Revoxes - eh?

Yep, agree with you beevee, it's an amazing little gizmo. The only problem I had was updating the firmware at first, but now I've got the hang of it the last 2 updates have gone in no trouble.

I already have a stack of a rechargables... the same ones go in my Akai EWI. Don't find the H4 too hard on batts though.

Wouldn't get rid of the tape machines, I'd need to come into this century first.

Wondered if you'd tried any external condenser mic's on the H4... I'm a little amazed that it puts out phantom power to drive em!

Saludos,
Ken.

Ola Again Ken,

I have a pair of old Realistic (Tandy) back-electrets which I've tried out on the H4 tentatively. I'll do a more extensive tryout one of these days.

These are amazing mikes for their age. They must date back to my Revox A77 days (mid 70s/80s) when I used them many times recording the male voice choir I used to belong to. They are powered by an AA battery though, not phantom power.

I just received my H4 today and I think I have found a serious fault...When I choose the external mic input (inp 1 & 2) I accidently discovered that the on board mics are still active, this renders my H4 useless for outdoor work, unless I have done something wrong I will need to send it back.

Hi New Guy here. We are a hospital radio station and registered charity. I have a weekly radio show that's run for 15 years now. I am planning on buying a Zoom H4 to do interviews away from the studio . I have bought a 16 channel mixing desk for home and plan to use that in conjunction with a PC and the Zoom for pre production. Are the rechargables in the Zoom removable?

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
