What do you carry your music in?

Hi,

What do you use to cart your music around in?

I?m seeking advice on what may not be the most glamorous or exciting potential purchase, I?ve been using a plastic carrier bag that?s only one small step up from a supermarket bag and would like to get something a little more useful. Ideally something that will take as well as my music books and loose sheet music, a box of reeds, my wallet, mobile phone and the assorted paraphernalia that I seem to be unable to leave the house without but yet never need!

Most music shops I?ve looked at have the cheap music bags with musical motifs that for some reason just don?t quite do it for me, maybe if I were a little younger!

Any suggestions gratefully received,

Try your local charity shops or freebie advertising rag for an old laptop bag. Or ask at a computer repairer - they'll have some old ones.

About the right size, with loads of pockets. Job done!

we have an ancient leather music case for originals and I photocopy our own music and it lives in an A4 folder with clear plastic sleeves for pages. (79p from Wilko's)

That way its easy to read and keep, and the originals are safe.

I was bought the old style music bag (with the steel bar) but it has no pockets and not very practical but very nostalgic.

I've been using a BHS carrier bag and the bottom is starting to go! NETTO'S are doing a laptopbag with several compartments for different things and a small compartment for reeds and stationery - pens pads etc.
Less than a tenner! Get one that is sealed because, for some reason, some people think that they need two shoulder straps for their bag!
I've just been and bought one. Very pleased with it!

I use a backpack that's really for laptop computers. Lots of room for reeds, pencils, tuner, metronome, mic and cable, jazz hat, tea bags, screwdrivers and also my pad of music. The music is all in an A4 ring binder in clear plastic wallets and sorted in alphabetical order.

The backpack has got lots of pockets and keeps hands free for saxes, stands etc. About ?20, but you can get them much cheaper.

I get loads of freebies from trade fairs and the like, which are a bit like laptop bags, but not so padded. Usually have a fold over cover, with pockets for calcualtors, business cards, pens, etc. The only downside is they usually have the logo of some dull IT or research conference on them. If you want one, PM me and I'll send you one.

I used to use a shoulder bag that I got as a freebie at a software testing conference(!). It's slim and just the right size for music books and A4 document wallets.

However, since I bought the alto I have another solution - the side pocket of the YAS275 case! A brilliant thought (thanks Yamaha), which is more than I can say for the zip away rucksack straps! The latter may be useful for a 12 year-old girl (probably who they were designed for), but not for a six foot, ahem stone, forty year-old bloke!

Thanks for the suggestions, it seems old laptop bags are the most useful, I?d not thought of them and as luck would have it, I have it on good authority someone in the family may be able to help me out.

I use the carrying bag that comes with the nifty music stand I use ( Nilton ). I used to have a nice old small leather suitcase ( not much bigger than an A4 sheet of paper, and about six inches deep ), until it suddenly occured to me ( I have these flashes of genius sometimes ) that it makes perfect sense to carry the music around with the stand - given that they go together.
