There are strange folk down there!!!! :w00t:

You bet there are. Some of us need more than one cup of tea all day...

Buxton hey? I was born in Macclesfield. My mum's family is from Pot Shrigley originally. (Is the microscope museum still open in Buxton?) In my cycling days I was up in the Hills all the time in that area, (Long Hill is a real killer as is Winnet's Pass.) I still go walking and climbing in that area too.

Given where you are I rate Johnny Roadhouse too. I have been going in there for 18 years now, man and child. It is worth the trip just to meet the main man himself.

I've been into Johnny Roadhouse once quite a while ago before I started learning sax/jazz to buy a guitar for my wife. My colleague came along and I wondered who the interesting bloke he was talking to was

I've been meaning to go back for a while now I'm slightly less ignorant!

I've been through Pot Shrigley a couple of times.. looks like a nice place. I'm not sure about the microscope museum. I've not heard of it, but I'll let you know. One thing I've not found in Buxton is a half decent music shop!

Have you been up Kinder Scout? I like going up from Snake Pass Inn and then back down the other side into Edale.

Johnny has a HUGE turnover of stock......

Kinder Scout, sure have. the climb up Snake Pass on a bike is a real lung buster. It was worth all that training to have the "puff" for sax.

Hi there High Peak guys.

Lived in Monyash for 7 years then lived in Stoney Middleton for years. Next door to the Lover's Leap Cafe.

Johnny Roadhouse might be nearer, but Bradford will have a wider stock I would think.

Both are definitely worth a visit, revisit, another visit.

Just noticed the thread- Ken Steven's in Cambridge is quite good- occasionally they have some vintage saxes in, generally they stock TJ, Yamahas and Yani's. You do get a discount if you have a CAM card- ie work for the University. They have a good rental scheme, where up to 6 months all the money goes to purchase if you want, 6-12 months I think that it is 70% after that I am not sure. They are nice bunch of staff- many on music course etc. Woodwind and Reed in Cambridge, is really good- Tim does an excellent repair service but there iis a week or three wait. They are where reeds-direct are located too and have extensive advice. They don't have many saxes on display but I do believe they deal with Yamaha, Yani, Semler etc. The have a good secondhand list but you need to ask for it. They are really nice people.

I have to say that I reckon it's hard to beat sax.co.uk if you can get to them, just becasue of the huge range of stock they carry. They have loads of rehearsal rooms and are happy for you to spend all day trying out different horns, moutpieces or whatever. The only downside is that their mouthpiece prices are not expecially cheap - not bad, but not the cheapest. Persoanlly I've been happy to pay, because of the ability to try before buying. Some of their prices on horns are good, though - a grand for a YAS62 anyone?

Yes that is a very good price and hard to beat! I was thinking the same thing just the other day, great minds think alike!

Nice people as well.

can anyone recomend shops in and near manchester for used saxes bar Johnny roadhouse? there are plenty of shops selling new saxes like Dawsons and forsyth but there is nowhere as i know of to go for a day and try out a lot of different brands.
in Dawsons and forsyth the normally stock yam 275 and 62s
and the odd Yani and Cannonball in Dawsons!

Simon,

I don't really know anywhere in Manchester itself other than those you've mentioned. Although Bradford isn't too far you would've thought there would be somewhere in the Greater Manchester area. It's pretty big.

I'm aiming to go up to Bradford and have a look at some point in the few weeks.

I've just posted this somewhere but I can't remember where.

Whereabouts in the High Peak are you?

Go to Williams on Manningham Lane in Bradford. (It used to be called Wood's)

In the basement is a shop called Woodwind Exchange run by Stewart and Lynda.

They'll give you a room, a boxful of mouthpieces, a cup of tea and you can stay and play all day.

They'll give advice and help and won't try and sell you something you dan't want or need.

Totally agree about Woodwind Exchange - Stu and Linda are both fantastic. You can even ask for a special coffee (contains baileys) 🙂
Even if you live away from Yorkshire it is worth the trip - they carry loads of stock but phone before hand just to make sure they have what you want. Loads of vintqage stuff. And ask Stu to play if he's there - he's amazing.

Yes still around but don't have much time at the mo' 🙁

Pickering is lovely isn't it - about 40 miles from us (Dacre Banks, near Pateley Bridge).

If you do visit you should go to Stuart's - you'll end up with something though - I always do - have no will power!

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
