As long as the OP is having fun, that's great, but getting a good mix, would be nice, if possible.

I believe the backing track needs a lot of compression but I didn’t think about it at first.

It really depends on which ones. And does the thumb qualify as finger or not? Left hand or right? Married or single?

I don’t see any harm in compressing a backing track, but maybe it’s best to first consider a performance over the backing track which folllows the dynamics. If that isn’t what you want then by all means compression can be a great tool - but as a sound engineer you know this already.

Back in the early '70s, trying to get a good mix, with a Sony reel to reel, Sound on Sound, required paying careful attention to the volumes.

Not sure what compression is, except to use it, when a Shark bites, and a tourniquet, is not handy. 🎶🏴‍☠️🎶
When a 15 foot long Shark, glides under your 15' kayak, prayer is often quiet. 🙏

Compression on Audacity levels out all the volume. Quiet bits become louder and loud bits become quieter.

I really like to add it to sax recordings. It seems to make the saxophone sound close to the mic.

honestly...regarding 'compression'....stop with digressions and let's stick to the basics...

All you needed to do here was turn up the volume of the backing track....it's simply too low in the video...

...then we would have been able to hear immediately what was awry here...

I produce content often and overlook simple things sometimes because by the time I'm done playing I'm eager to finish and relax. Obviously mixing is an important step and in the future I'm going to make sure my backing tracks are loud enough.

A bit off-topic, but I did have a close encounter with a Great White Shark will paddling in my sea kayak off the CA coast near where I live. I watched the huge dorsal fin cutting through the water coming right toward me. I didn't waste any time on praying; I simply paddled away as fast as I could. Pretty exciting, to say the least.

Back on topic:

All you needed to do here was turn up the volume of the backing track....it's simply too low in the video...

...then we would have been able to hear immediately what was awry here...

Only one in USA in 2025.
The film is responsible for all the fear not the sharks.

No, it was just off Pillar Point, offshore from El Granada, north of Half Moon Bay. Have you heard of the Maverick's Wave, a huge 40-50+ foot wave that occurs a few times of year during the Winter? It attracts big wave surfers from all over. That's basically where I was (the wave was not happening at the time).

Very true. It's the seals that those sharks are after. The area I was paddling has a lot of seals and sharks are definitely around. But I've never really worried about getting attacked in my kayak (although I do know a guy who had the stern of his kayak bitten, but he was unharmed). Seeing that shark was more of a thrill than a scary incident.

I forgot that's your neck of the woods (or waters). I gave a "satellite" talk at the Mote Marine Lab, Bill Mote was still there at 96 years old and Eugenie was the main event. And then, as dinner wrapped up she came over to sit at my table and I got to talk to her for quite awhile. Which kind of brings this back to lush life 😀
