As always I just want to give you my (positively intended) feedback which you aer entirely free to just ignore or perhaps consider,

Up until the first minute, I really enjoyed your 'timing''ánd your subtle variations on the melody and timing. From (approx.) 1 minute your timing was very slightly 'out of synch' with the backing track and gradually became noticeable your 'recovery'
towards the break at 2 m

I think that your improvised solo began well: in timing and in key. But IMHO, your solo quickly 'spun out of control''. Losing any 'grounding' in the rhythm and bearing no resemblance to any improvised melody.


IMHO this indicates (to me) that you're more interested in developing (and displaying) your 'technical sax skills' rather than developing (and displaying) your 'musical skills'

Just remember that some of the greatest sax players of all times are not remembered because of how 'fast' they could play (which they could) orf how 'sophisticated' improvisations they could play (which they could) but for stimple jazz ballads that they (musically) played so well

I find that playing along I can immediately hear if I'm in key or out. If you can't hear that, you're in a world of trouble.

It can be one of the issues with self taught musicians. I play with a lotta singers, this dynamic can be very commonplace with them...most often the ones coming from a non conventional music student background...or nonexistent...

I agree it is a big thing to get right...as in....Mandatory.

It's doable, but takes ear training.

If it is something that happens 'often' or 'alot' for a player....then best to attend to it posthaste....rather than letting it slide....it is a super important Fundamental....even for musicians who have zero interest in playing with a group.

I think I can hear when I'm playing in the wrong key, but if I convince myself I'm in the right key, it will seem to be right. I need to be able to stop and ask myself if it's right, and then investigate, instead of playing blindly and being detached from the way the music is supposed to be.

Well 10-4 there good buddy, that's a big negatory on the forgetting the 70's trucking anthem. Yeah, as a 12 year old I was deep into the CB craze. I still remember all the lingo unfortunately.

If you're playing in the wrong key, it may not sound out of tune but it will have the wrong tone center. If you're a third, fourth or fifth out it may just sound a little odd but it won't lock in.

With most tunes, songs melodies etc. the last note gives you the key. The last Chord is usually where it resolves to tonic. If your backing finishes with a different Chord to the melody, it's a mismatch.

I wish I had more theory. 🤔

Disco Duck is a bit unfinished it has a faint shadow of the vogeltjesdans. Dis Gorilla is on another level. It reminds me of the Rondo's singing about the emotional quality of life of King Kong. Luckily there so much water passed under the bridge that all trolls are soaked and we can say meh with the Bougies.

Yup, determine last chord. 90% of time in jazz standards that gives you the key of tune.

This is very easy. Literally FF to end of song, hear the root of final chord. Identify that note. This DOES take a little ear training but most of time it isn't difficult.

Look up charts of the tune. See if the last chord is major or minor.

You now have key of tune.

Example -

"the root note final chord was C concert, or D on tenor...

I, at the moment, am UNABLE to recognize the sound of a major vs. minor chord....but...

pulling up Charts of tune's chord changes, they all show it is a minor chord, last chord. "

So key of tune is Cminor (concert) or Dminor (Tenor).

So when you pull up a chart for yourself to play, get the chart key to match that recording key.

You literally have to do this if you wanna post recordings...because this recording you posted is simply too difficult to provide feedback on. It is too 'off' for a listener to concentrate on your playing...

Speaking as one of them - I was so happy the first time I clearly heard that I - or the backing track - was wrong.

It's something to work towards if your new to music, a late starter etc.
