timing is a problem with this tune because it is rubato feel throughout, very challenging tune for most players.

maybe my ears..but it sorta sounds like you aren't in the same key as the backing track (?)

I do this a lot (play in the wrong key.) It's weird that I can't tell sometimes.

Trying Lush Life

...
As always, I liked your tone, 'breathy sound' and your vibrato control.

TBH, I suspect that the 'tinkly, free' style of your piano backing track would make it difficult to get the 'timing' right. The backing tracking is (on my Laptop) very quiet in the 'mix' compared to your sax. So I can't compare the 'timing' of your sax playing with the piano all that well. But something in your timing didn't sound quite right at times.

Purely as an illustration of what I mean by the piano backing track (and NOT comparing sax playing!), the piano backing on this video seems to have a much stronger (implied) 'beat'. I - at least - would it easier to stay 'in the beat' with this kind of piano backing track than with the piano style I (very softly) heard on your backing track. Even though the tempo sometimes changes. (and the pianist doesn't always play on every beat, I would also find it easier to anticipate the next (piano) beat.

It's not always easy to find backing tracks, but sometimes it's worth comparing different versions.

Hope this helps,

So ...seriously, now...other listeners please...is the backing track same key as Alon is playing ? Or is it me ?

I have been keeping tabs on my Slow Descent Into Madness....the answer to this would be important to me (clinically speaking)....
Это ловушка!

Try playing alto sheet music on a tenor, with a backing track. Once you get used to it, you won't want to go back. Or play the concert key notes on a Bb instrument, being one step off adds that sweet tension.

@AlonW, the key sounds a bit off to me too - especially at the start and on certain parts.

I found this YouTube video showing tenor sax notes and chords for Lush Life. Of course it depends a bit on what key the piano backing track is in but I'm assuming that it's standard.

I'm not suggesting that you play the notes shown in this video 'as written'! I'm just posting it to help you check your playing against this tenor sax version. In particular against the chord changes in the melody.

Again, I just hope that this helps you!

Db major is the original concert key, but often played in other keys.
In Db, it opens with Ab to Db.
What note is Alon starting his take on?
What key in the OP's piano backing track?
IIRC, Ronstadt sings it in the same key.

While looking for the Kay Davis take, I also found a Swedish Hip Hop version.
Gotta love Gm for Picc 🥳

That's not a 'version'....it's a different tune....

am sure the title made wonderful clickbait tho....

Like All of Me.....and Black Coffee......a sad current modus operandi - re- use a classic songtitle for your pop trash song....

Haha, reminds me of the last bass player I played with. We start a song and after 10 seconds everybody stops. And then the bass player said: Ooops, I am on the wrong string....
Or 'I started on the wrong fret'.

If a closed practice/jam....send them home right there.

If actually a gig, finish the set....then you got a 15 min break to phone up someone else and another 15 for them to get there....
