Accessories New App: Saxophone Tuner - Hz Generator (free, no ads)j

So it makes sense for one convention or another...
I would probably find the frequency not particularly useful, but the may have been a time as I was learning much production and engineering that would have been useful for reference. These days I tend to rely (rightly or wrongly) on my ears. But I can definitely see the usefulness for many applications.

For years I have always thought of middle C as C3, it was convenient to use MIDI notes when doing studio stuff. But since I discovered many saxophone players use C1 for the bottom C I also use that. But low A on baritone confuses me, is it A1?
Yeah, it's really confusing. Here to stay though I think. I converse occasionally with a guy who grew up on a concert pitch instrument and has been learning sax. I frequently get texts talking about any alternative fingerings for X to Y, then realising about 10 texts later that he is talking concert pitch. There's no rules to it, but for me it's easier to talk concert pitch in ensembles (with transposing instruments) and when having instrument specific conversations, especially re fingerings or other specific problems I find it more helpful to talk about "our" notes.

I think Dr. G is referring to C1 (sax) vs C4 (piano etc)? No?

Sure. TE tuner has all sorts of bells and whistles, useful to someone else, I guess.
Yes, and I would go by concert pitch on a tuner. Chat about the sax in general - I'd talk about our range: Bb1 to F3 (and beyond).

I'd love to hear your feedback - what works, what's missing, what could be better?

So @Digitide Blaze maybe this is useful feedback about conventions. ie some people might use saxophone naming such as the bottom C of the saxophone being C1 vs using other conventions where middle C is C3 or C4. Could it switch between those for people who want to know?

Having said that I'd wonder if it actually matters for the tuning function, presumably you play a note you know what the note is. But the actual pich/register/octave may be more useful for the tone generator side of the app.

Suggestion: When in concert pitch mode, display the convention as shown in Post #17. For saxes, apply the appropriate transposition and convention for saxophones where the lowest pitch for each instrument, alto and tenor is Bb1 (I suggest low A, below Bb1, for bari is A0, else A1 will depend on whether the horn has a low A).

Great point - octave naming can be confusing depending on the convention. I'll definitely think about adding an option to switch between them in future updates. Appreciate the feedback!
