Might be our hearing, but the timing seems off in the video.
Not smooth.
Something to work on.
Maybe try it with just a metronome, and a bit slower at first.
Make it more musical, as opposed to honking it out.
Or anything else for that matter...lol. I read a great appraissal by you on another forum. Could you listen to it and give an honest opinion..its not great but a good oppo to learn..
Thanks for the invite, Eddie.
I agree with @PiccoloPirate that the timing seems off. Sing along with your recording as others will be doing to see/hear whether your interpretation is friendly to singers that are familiar with the tune. It seems rushed to me.
“Make it more musical…”. I agree with this as well. It again comes down to singing the song - even if you are not a strong singer. Listen to the lyrics. I recall watching the Monkees sing this song and it is a very lighthearted tune. Your interpretation seems much heavier than I interpret it. Lighten up. If growling is a must, save it for the last chorus of the tune instead of starting off with it. The key to making a song more listenable is to build a story.
Consider also that you are going to be in a small space in close proximity to your audience. Your recording is pretty representative of what the person sitting across the aisle from you is going to hear. As much as I am a fan of making a big sound and filling space, I am usually doing that in the context of playing to a full club rather than giving a concert in a space the size of the men’s room.
I’ll stop short of suggesting musical alternatives such as a kazoo orchestra (I actually heard one last weekend at a college event), but I remain in the camp encouraging you to pass on this opportunity.
Be well,
George
