Saxophones Curved Sopranos

The larger saxes are curved, makes them easier to handle. The odd exceptions are usually curiosities/special orders. Sops and smaller saxes are quite practical straight, but some prefer the curvies. Less strain on the thumb is a bonus with curved sops.

I prefer the straight sops, the curvies seem more like toys to me, but each to his own. I've seen curved sops played at foghorn volumes, without amplification. They're not toys, by any yardstick. One advantage of a straight sop is that the bell doesn't get in the way of your fingers. But the bell on modern ones is offset, so not really an issue.

Happy Birthday Jan Gabarek - Big Seven 0 today.

If I remember rightly straight altos and tenors were " à la Mode " - must've been about 15 years ago.
JK built a few of each at that time. I know Albie Donelly played a straight alto for a while when he was endorser for JK. They didn't really catch on, I haven't seen either around for a long time now.
