Gives the James Brown 'Sex Machine'...we all know that one..."Hey Bobby take it to the bridge...'answer'...."yeah man take it to the bridge" a new meaning...

Ok..ok..I'll get my hat/coat...order me a taxi..

Shall I take it to the bridge? Shall I take it to the bridge?

.......let's hit it and quit.... 😱

Seriously though Nick, I hope everything's on the mend and you are blowing again soon.

Crikey Nick how'd you manage that! Were you racing or just out training. Hope you get better soon.

Hi all,

Thanks for the good wishes. It was a race which went along a canal path. The 5 mile mark was just as the path narrowed under an arched bridge. I looked at my watch just as I reached the bridge and strayed a bit close to it!!!

Got carted off to hospital in an ambulance with blood gushing out of the wound. I did get seen straight away though, 'cos they didn't want me bleeding all over the waiting room!!!

Managed a bit of practice last night with no side effects. I've got to crack on as I've got my grade 2 in March.

New: Spyro Gyra - Morning Dance & Minor Pentatonic in A

Better: Opening throat more and getting a clearer tone on the Alto

Worse/Same: Still struggling to read notes correctly at any appreciable speed, still learning pieces and relying on memory instead of the sheet.

T.

New: Got "Guest Spot: Andrew Lloyd Webber Showstoppers" in Waterstone's sale - enjoying trying "Pie Jesu" and "Phantom of the Opera".

Better: Grade 2 tune 'Song for my Father"

Not worse, but no better: Grade 2 tune "For Turiya" (don't think I'll be choosing that one!!)

Nick and PeeDee ~ hope this finds you both mended 😉

New: the foot of ice on the edge of the roof

Better: I get to leave the house and go to Concert Band rehearsal tonight at the college.

Worse: the gallons of water that just gushed out of my ceiling from the ice melting!

I think when realtors describe the "charm" of living in a 200 year old farmhouse - this is what they are actually talking about.....

New: mouthpiece, ligature and reeds.

Better: The sound I'm making - less foghorn, squeaks and slightly more tuneful - At Last!

Worse: Why is it that whenever I go to my lesson I always sound worse than I do at home? I am sure my teacher does not believe me when I say I do actually practise!

Also - Why is it that when you want to try out things like new mouthpieces, that the nice understanding gentleman you spoke to on the 'phone morphs into a young person who can't be more than 6 years old (I am a 40 something) and watches you whilst you squeak your way round numerous mouthpieces trying to find one that you can make sound even remotely reasonable, whilst dying of embarrassment?

New: transposing on sight. Thanks to top tips on this site!

Better: Note bending.

Worse: C to D and back again without tonguing. Long running bugbear, which is probably a psychological one rather than anything else because it doesn't happen when I'm playing and don't think about it.

And Emma: I know exactly what you mean: everything disappeared out of my head when asked to play a G major scale. Like I haven't been playing it on various instruments for, oh, about 25 years...

Both the same thing really; the fact that you are not very confident yet and feel like you are under scrutiny, probably.

Don't worry, it doesn't get any better :S

Yep, so true. A good teacher will know that's the case and help you get at ease at the start of the lesson, but it happens to everyone.

Of course you can get the reverse effect - really working on something under the guidance of the teacher, getting it sorted during the lesson, then can you remember how you did it the next day?

Exactly the same thing happens to me. I can practise and practise something and then really foul it up in my lesson.

Same instrument, different environments (teacher and home) - sounds like you become psychologically affected by the experience, even if you are most aware of the similarities (playing same music on sax!).

'Blue Saxophone' is a pretty good book - I also play from 'Blue Trumpet' by the same author, on my high brass. BTW I think it is possible to get hold of CD backing tracks for Blue Sax.

Kind regards

New: clarinet i've inherited from my daughter trying to get to grips with low f and g

Better: More Time to play as I'm not running at the moment and my sax playing has improved for some reason whilst being on the back burner for the last 2 months - wierd

Worse: Bit fed up being laid off with a calf tear and a 1/2 marathon race coming up early March. Bit worried I won't be fit enough but enjoying having more time to play.

Especially enjoying resting my leg in front of the Rugby 😉 Will be hopping up and down in half an hour 😛
