SOTM SOTM January 2018 - Softly as in a Morning Sunrise

Apologies peeps, had a lot on so catch up time....
Lovely version Rhys, Bari is sounding very nice indeed lots of lovely beefy notes :thumb:

SOTMs are a good excuse for me to experiment with that.

And a lovely experiment it was too 🙂

Inspired by the nice and laid back versions of rhysonsax and saxpanther, here’s my slow version:

Enjoyed that version :thumb:

Here's my effort, after a frustrating time fighting with the technology.

Technophobe here  pleased you conquered the technology and gave us a version. :yess: nice one Nigel

Enjoying these takes on a cool tune

Just trying to keep up with the program, had a go at this months SOTM & BOTM, only got the first verse, no soloing yet, hopefully more time soon...as I've said for the past 6 months 🙁

** Edit
In general, I don't trust songs with a long title (all the classic songs have short titles...Paranoid, Highway Star, Immigrant song...), but this one is actually nice, I'll come back to it. Soloing seems best on the D minor pentatonic, then the F major...which is the same thing in a different order 🙂

Thanks to all participants in this months SOTM :clapping: enjoyed your takes and i hope you enjoyed the tune.

Do we have any volunteers for next months SotM ?
It can be any song any genre you decide !

If no one else has volunteered by 2nd February I have an idea for a tune. But it would be better if someone new with fresh ideas could step forward.

Rhys

PS And a big thank you to @trimmy for choosing a good song and running the thread so well.

I know it's an old thread, but I just recorded two fresh versions of this song for another forum and would also like to share them here.

1. - 'Softly As In A Morning Sunrise' (Florida no USA 10* - Rico Royal 2) - 220 bpm:
Softly As In A Morning Sunrise (FLnU10*-RR2) 220 by mrpeebee

2. - 'Softly As In A Morning Sunrise' (Berg Larsen 150/2/SMS - Rico Royal 2) - 160 bpm - Bass only backing:
Softly As In A Morning Sunrise (BL150/2-RR2) Bass by mrpeebee

Both takes played on the same reed. The Berg Larsen is a modern mouthpiece, it plays very well (they can still make good pieces!). The tip is huge, but for resistance it can be compared to my Florida no USA 10* Link, my main mouthpiece.

The Berg sounds in my ears more spread and a bit less complex than the Link. It can get gritty when pushed. The Bass only backing was nice, but the flow stocked at places and his ending was a bit strange. The Link sounds in my ears a bit more focused and complex, also articulated a bit easier (being a smaller tip than the Berg).

I was actually not unhappy with both takes and sounds (considering it are just hit and record takes), but prefer the Link take.

I’d be chuffed if i could produce two pieces like that (hit & record) both thoroughly enjoyable.
I actually preferred the Berg version enjoyed the naked feel of the sax and bass, but as said i’d be very happy with both.
220bpm 😳

Also did a take in the same recording session with the 200 bpm backing supplied by John and the Berg Larsen 150/2 SMS mouthpiece. I had more issues with the 200 bpm tempo on the Berg compared to the 220 bpm tempo on the Florida 10* Link posted before.
