Hello, just joined. Thanks! Has anyone had the need for or used a rubber cover for the left thumb button?
It would anchor the thumb firmly and comfortably in place. Have been unsuccessful in finding a cover of
the correct dimensions, although realize that one may find something appropriate among plumbing etc.
accessories.

That's exactly the opposite of what I want. I do a lot of moving around on palm keys, front F and E, etc. and I need a slick surface on the LH thumbrest to be able to move around and let the thumb pivot. Even cork is too frictional for me.

If you want to increase the surface area to reduce contact pressure on your thumb (ever play an unmodified Conn 12M baritone with the tiny domed thumbrest?), you can enlarge it with epoxy or cork, then apply varnish to make it slicker.

I suppose you could add thin sheet cork or thin sheet rubber to an existing thumb rest, attaching with contact cement.

I guess we think differently here. I also use palm key risers and haven't seen that as a hindrance to my playing. I don't move my left thumb much except for pressing the octave key. Not even when using the left palm keys. I play tenor and alto. What I have in mind is a thin rubber cover but haven't been able to find one of the right size. Thought that perhaps someone has already gone through this search.

Gosh, a thin tube, closes at one end, made of rubber, that could be slipped over the thumb rest as a sheath? I dunno, maybe ask Johnny? Maybe Google Durex, they make a range of latex products...

I suspect the problem is that, well, rubber stretches. So, having safely wrapped the thumb rest, any horizontal pressure will cause bunching etc. and, somehow, you might be pushing horizontally more than average

Looks like there are such made of plastic (not the right size though). One from rubber that one can slide around and wraps around the button would be preferred instead of gluing. Anyway, thanks for the replies. I take it from here as the saying goes.

If you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras. You need a thin layer of rubber? Glue a piece of thin rubber.

I just now bought a piece 6" square by 1/16" thick of black rubber at the plumbing department of my local hardware store for $2.50.

Not the kind of reply I was expecting when I joined this forum today. Supposed to be funny I guess, but not laughing. I won't pursue this further here.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
