Here's this month's clip, featuring my new toy, a Heil PR31 bw microphone :3 I really like this mic, it just records me like me with no fiddling.

I've put the raw audio for download as a .wav if anyone wants to play around with it. In addition, I've spoken with london pro audio, seems like there is a standing wave in my room >.> No surprise since my room is a regular room. It affects middle D very strongly. Tried means (i.e. moving furniture, clothes) to alter the geometry, no luck. Ah well.

Is that reverb in the first clip, Chris? What kind is it?

Hi Gallen, yes it's reverb. It should be small hall from Cubase plus a little eq and compression. http://www.box.net/shared/jjrx2xoelvbcjj1v5o2o you can tell it's sunday evening with nothing on tv(hehe)

Monthly log again, and this one marks my one year into learning the sax, so here's the piece I've been slowly getting better at this year!

I'm fairly new here so had not seen your "log". I listened to the first post and listened to this last one. Do you have a "cringe” factor in listening to what we did previously? When starting out it's good to have support as there is so much that's awful, and it just takes time and dedication to get to a point where it sounds good.

I'm very impressed with how far you've come in that time and this is possibly where you could use some constructive criticism to move ahead at the same or an increased clip. Initially you had little control of your tone and were way out of tune most of the time. The tone was equally wobbly. You've got your tone down and well under control, but there remains a slight tendency to tighten up and play slightly sharp. You can hear this near the end of your track. Relax.

There's a nice flow in your improvisation and you don't try to play too much. This is very smart. Most try too hard and only impress with not being able to play what they are attempting. Pros always play within their ability and try to make it sound easy. Dumb amateurs try to play beyond their means. You figured this out where 99% don't. Good job.

Most importantly there is a lyric quality to your playing. This is extremely important as too many get trapped in playing mechanically. You need to develop mechanical facilities and understand music theory, but that is not an end to itself. If you haven't got anything to say other than "look at how great my chops are", then you have nothing to give except mechanics and ego. That's pretty limited for anyone who wants to play in public. How did you manage to escape these traps?

That's great Gallen, wonderfully played. And in just one year. You have made quantum leaps 🙂 You have a nice tone to the horn, good technique and can just spread your wings and fly... to anything :welldone

If I might make a minor suggestion it would be to hold some of the notes a bit longer to tie the thing a bit more together. But that's just my taste, others might disagree...

I just went back to listen to some really early stuff, yes I did "cringe" 🙂 Thanks for the criticism, it's very well thought out and I will definitely keep it in mind. Re: Improvisation, I actually am reading off sheet music, sadly. My improvisation skills are really poor.

Hi rudjari! Thanks for the suggestion - if you have a moment could you provide me with some timings where you feel where the notes could be played longer? I think there are some towards the end that could possibly sound better if played longer as well. This was my 2nd take, didn't want my neighbours to kill me 😀

Good to be honest about the improv, but hey, you had me fooled, and that's good. You made it your own. A good actor doesn't make you think Shakespeare wrote great stuff, you hear it coming from the actor's mouth like it's the first time it's ever been heard.

Really well done.:welldone Good tone and control. btw there is nothing wrong with reading the solo part. You could make money by being able to read anything, rather than nothing. Plus the more you read the more ideas will get into your ear and fingers for future reference.

I wonder what you will sound like in 1 years time??
