OK, done the dirty deed. I've just ordered the Bahaus Walstein Phosphor Bronze tenor from Woodwind and Brass. It comes with a Yamaha 5C mouthpiece and Rovner 2R ligature, plus a cotton duster, silk pull through and 10 grade 2.5 Rico Reeds. Total cost of ?515.

It should be with me Tuesday and I have a new teacher coming to the house for a 1 hour lesson in the evening. I'll post an initial review for anyone who may be interested. No more battling with my son for the alto.

Lloyd

Well done that Lloyd!

Now the challenge of trying to avoid sounding like a central heating system. You had also book an appointment with the osteopath if you are going to lug one of those lumps of metal around. Don't sit down to play a Tenor - you will look a right wus 😛

Hope it all arrives safely, and you are thrilled to bits. After a few weeks you will need a Graftonite mouthpiece and Rico Jazz selects, and a new strap, but what the 'ell!

Good luck and kind regards

The set up seems pretty good for now. In any case I can have some fun later on experimenting with different mouthpieces and reeds; at this price I can maybe look at some of the higher quality stuff that maybe I wouldn't have considered.

Anyway, can't wait for next week. It will be interesting to see how the tunes that I have learnt on the alto sound on the tenor, especially as most of them were written for the tenor in the first place.

Well done Lloyd, PeeDee hit the nail on the head 😉

Be interesting to hear how you get on with the tenor low notes if you have only played alto up to now, watch out for loose fillings

They are heavy but I only use a Neotech strap, I find it more comfortable than a standard strap. No need for a bra here Smiffy 😛 🙂

you don't know what you're missing

Come on, How many of you Macho Dudes sit down while playing the Tenor?! 😛

Sounds like most of you play the Alto like a Tenor. Perhaps Pete can run an online workshop on how to actually play an Alto to stop you all sounding dreadful :w00t:

I do mostly play the Alto sitting, I find it easier and quicker to study that way until I am happy to play a whole tune

The Tenor, standing, just can't sit with it

I will be standing today

Sitting to play tenor?? What's that about? I can't even imagine it. I doubt the Walstein is any heavier than my old Conn 10M, which was made by men who manufactured tractors in their spare time

A Neotech strap should do the job - not exactly rock and roll, but a good bit of kit.

Good luck with it - I'll be joining you in the WOC (Walstein Owners Club) shortly I hope 8)

I've already got a Neotech strap so this should do the job for now. I am guessing that, due to the size of the tenor, I should play it to the side of me rather than in front and then twist the neck round a bit?

As for sitting down with it, that's definitely out; I might get it caught in the hem of my dress!

Lloyd

yeah to the side a bit and twist the neck

caught in the hem of my dress!

It's a bitch in'it along with the draft, don't snag your tights/stockings

You lucky lucky thing. I absolutely love mine and when I do hit the bottom B it vibrates through my feet!

As for the weight I've found it very heavy (I have a rickity neck from playing alto on a sling) and have a neotech harness which is so comfortable I sometimes forget I've got it on - takes all the weight in much the same way as a good backpack (only on the front obviously). I've not tried playing it sitting as I'm so short it would probably come down to my ankles 😛

What a thrill you're going to get on Tuesday when it arrives 🙂 Let's have a full report.

Meekly raises hand.

But honest its the band - we all play sitting, otherwise the stick waggler up front gets 'irritable'.

Practice standing up - is that a redeeming feature?

you don't know what you're missing [\quote]

Oooo, must try it then sweetie

One thing to watch out for in maybe the first week Lloyd; keep an eye on the small cork pads under some of the keys. A while back there were a number of posts about these cork pads coming loose, may have only affected earlier Walstein's though.

However I had the pad under the 'A' key work loose, fortunately I noticed before it escaped and could glue it back in place.

But as others have said, you should love it :w00t:

Cool choice of sax. I always play standing.....i just cant keep still enough when I play, I'm always bopping around. A Neotech definitely helps remove the strain.
I hope Tuesday comes quickly enough for you. 😉

For years I played tenor with an old thin (15mm) thick leather belt, never though twice about it, well I was (am) poor!

I only ever noticed problems with a standard sling when I hot tailed it out of tenordom to baridorm! I now wear a bra as old git affectionately refers.

That's got nowt to do with chesticles!
