Hi Pete

I see you're building a page about Earl Bostic - great stuff! I've listened and transcribed a bit of Earl's stuff and would like to point out one album which I think is the one to get if you're into his playing:

<<Earl blows a fuse>> - Charly Records... has the hits 'Flamingo' and 'Night Train' but also that famous rendition of 'Harlem Nocturne'. Also does 'Cherokee', a really good transcription for any beg rock alto player to get down, and 'Cuttin Out'. Just great fun!

Apparently he taught John Coltrane some technique when the young Trane played in his band (?)

I have to own up now, that page started about 3 years ago and Ihaven't got round to updating it, although I am currently in the process of transcribing an Earl Bostic solo to put here on the extra pages.

Yes that's a great album, I have it on vinyl still.

Earl was one of my earliest influences, (after Lee Allen and Ornette).

I've applied for a PRS licence to stream audio clips from my site (legally !!!) so hoping to get quite a few Bostic clips up there.

Simon, I like the new avatar, looks like it is sqished due to having to be square but looks cool like that.

Earl bostic has to be one of my all time favourites! His style, tone and pace of playing inspired me to learn to play the sax back in the early 80's "Flamingo" was one of his biggest and most famous hits although I reckon his version of "Deep purple" is I absolutely brilliant

Rumour has it that Charlie "Bird" Parker got burned by EB at a jam session many years ago!

Other great players I admire in this style are Red Prysock and Clifford Scott.

well I bought the album mentioned above (blows a fuse) and it's great! a really nice collection of songs from a great era. It shall be getting a decent amount of playtime in my house!
