BOTM BOTM JAN 2019 - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat

I still can't fathom how the chords fit the backing track, try as I might. I've tried playing tonic notes, but simply can't get anything to chime or rhyme

A click intro would help identify exactly where the first chord starts and I would listen and learn from there, But at the mo I can't even pin down the start of the first bar! Very frustrating to have this great resource for a really interesting track without being able to get even a toehold!

I need my ears cleaned out
Actually I agree it's not easy to hear with this backing track. The bass gives you the best clue of beat and root notes of chords, but it's not easy to follow.

60 bpm, so 1 second per beat and 4 seconds per bar.

4 bar intro:
  • 1st bar of the intro: just double bass
  • 2nd bar of the intro: add the drums
  • 3rd bar of the intro: add piano
  • 4th bar of the intro: a bit of a drum fill leading onto the tune
Maybe try one of the other backing tracks ? Or a backing track from YouTube, such as:

or:

Hope that helps.

@Ivan - I will make a version of the backing track with a click start tomorrow.

OK Folks. Here is a revised revised version of the notes and backing tracks in both concert Eb minor and concert F minor.

The revised notes and the backing tracks have simpler chords for the improvisation section than my first attempt, so not as difficult. These are also, hopefully, the chords used by Mingus.

There are various versions of the backing chords, and I have taken the ones from @aldevis post above, which are almost, but not exactly the same as those I got from @rhysonsax . (The difference lies in which IV chords are major and which are minor.)

The backing tracks come both with and without a 2 bars of clicks at the beginning.

The form is:
2 bars of clicks in the "with clicks" tracks. (1,3,1,2,3,4)
4-bar intro (first bass alone, then with drums, then with piano)
Song once
Improv twice (The backing chords are different the second time)
Song once again
4-bar coda on the last note for you to embellish at will.

Tempo: 60bpm.

Band In a Box is sometimes great, and sometimes appalling. Today it was not in a collaborative mood. 🙁

@nigeld you're a Diamond! Should be a new rating option

That's Seamus Blake.
What a player!

The band is the Mingus Big Band, the only link with CM is Mingus's wife, that owns the rights.
A bit like the Glenn Miller Band, whose French rights are owned by a guy in Ilford (great player, though)

Boris Kozlov plays bass with the Mingus Big Band and uses Charlie Mingus' bass - that's another link !
