BOTM BOTM April 2016 "Alfie"

Very nice David - I enjoyed that a lot. Can you tell us more about this - for instance who did the arrangement, and is that you on all four parts or a quartet with you playing one sax ?

Rhys

Thanks Rhys. The arrangement comes from the CD of sax scores from the Clarinet Institute of LA. The quartet was just me, cloned courtesy of Garageband and that all-important click track.

Is it just me (very probably!), but the tune seems to bear no relation to the beat of the backing track? I appreciate that with slow ballads, artistic licence allows a fair bit of flexibility, but I'm struggling to count four to it ( so in hindsight, it's maybe not the tune, but the backing that doesn't seem to have any discernable beat?).

Which version of the backing track are you talking about ? Try to listen to it several times through to get a feel for the pulse, then where the bars are and make sure you know if the track you are listening to has an introduction (e.g. 4 extra bars) before the tune starts.

If the backing track was made with Band in a Box it should be rock solid on the tempo, but that might be easier to hear by listening to the drums and bass than the chordal instruments (piano, guitar, maybe strings) that are less strict and maybe more musical.

Thanks, chaps, think I've got my head round it-I think it was just an unfamiliar tune (apart from the first four bars!), that didn't really go where my ears were expecting it to!

My version wasn't strictly to time, there are a couple of rallentandos where I hung on for an extra beat of the click track. I haven't tried doing that before and although not perfect it worked better than I expected.
