BOTM BOTM April 2016 "Alfie"

Hey,

I was hoping for

but anyway...

Alfie

This "wav" streaming sounds awful.
I've put the version to my Dropbox: Alfie
Selmer SBA with Philtone Sapphire Special Limited 7*

And here's one with Yamaha 875, Sapphire Special Limited, slightly different mic position.

Alfie

Cheers, Guenne

Absolutely Superb.......ALL THREE

I have a beginner question regarding the Eb version, In Bar 33 (1st page, last line 3rd bar) there is a Gb shown, since it is set in A major with out the accidental the G would be sharp so is this a G natural or an enharmonic with F# and if the latter why not put the note on the F line and then it would be sharp because of the key?
What am I missing here?

yes it should be just written as F#. It's BIAB problem - it doesn't handle enharmonic notation or chords very well.

Really like that wistful and mellow version, Chris.

And I am loving your backing track. Do you know what the usual keys are for male and female vocals ? There is a lovely version sung by Ian Shaw with Iain Ballamy playing great tenor. But the vocal has some challenging jumps in it.

@rhysonsax
Rhys, not sure what key the original vocal is in🙂 I just went with the RB version. I also like the Vibes track, more room and fewer places to hide>:) Enjoyed the alto version and looking forward to the Tenor version(no excuse now) Thanks for the comments and for posting..

@Jeanette
Jeanette, I was going to do this as a Friday ballad, but, I had to use plan 'B' for this months BOTM🙂
Thanks as always for the comments..

@Colin the Bear
Colin, totally agree with you.🙂

Keep the versions coming guys..

Chris..

I just checked Alfie in Ted Gioia's Jazz Standards book and discovered this version that I like.

Note that he makes a reference to Sonny Rollin's Alfie's Theme at the end, we'd call that 'un clin d'oeil' ie 'a wink', but I'm not sure if it carries the same meaning in english. I have my limitations! 😳

Something else in Ted Gioia's book that I found interesting is a word from Donald Fagen about Bacharach's style: "Ravel-like harmonies married to street-corner soul".

Hey,

I moved back to my "normal" Philtone Sapphire 7*, the "Special Limited" is too special for me, playing with students I would have to change MPCs...

I replaced the files, links are the same.

Yamaha 875 with "G" neck

Selmer Mark VI

Intonation of the string section stays horrible, my playing gets better (at least I think so, hehe).

Cheers, Guenne
