Bauhaus tenor for ?400!

Hi Dave!

I have the new curved soprano, which is beautiful - it has 'Bauhaus' on the bell, which seems to be the norm.
Several people on the website own this tenor and are very happy with it - I doubt whether anything betters it under ?1000. Go for it!

Studio saxophones are excellent folks, too!

Kind regards
Tom

When I visited the Walstein people in May this year they spoke about why they were changing the name - apparently there is another "Walstein" company around. All their saxes will carry the Bauhaus or Walstein-Bauhaus name in the future.

This tenor looks to me like the standard Walstein and not the higher-spec (and more expensive) model that they are introducing.

Still a nice horn, but I don't think it is the bargain it appears.

Check with Peter of Studio saxes - he's good to deal with.

That's the one that I've just got from Woodwind and Brass for around the same price although the postage is a bit more. BUT it came with a yamaha mouthpiece (which you could choose the size of) a rovner lig and a neotech strap. So all in all I think that might be better value. Mind you it doesn't say what mouthpiece comes with it.

I'm really pleased with mine. 🙂

I would be pretty certain that Studio Saxes have a strong link with Martin at WWB and it means that people in this neck of the woods do not have to travel to the South coast of England to try them out.

Yes, the saxes are all now called Bauhaus Walstein, from what I can see, but it is not obvious what the Studio Saxophone Tenor is supplied with, which would be worth checking out.

Does seem that the Yamaha choice is either "very small", "small" or "not quite as small", which is on a bit of a theme TBH.

Kind regards
Tom

Thanks for the feedback guys and gals and thanks for the positive comments on Peter, Rhys.

The deed is done, tenor has been ordered 🙂

Even if it is not the half price bargin I at first thought there are enough positive posts on the Walstein.

I am not bothered about what m/piece is included as I already have 3 different ones.

It will be interesting to see how it compares with my current inexpensive black Chinese tenor, although I expect it to prove that the noise that comes out of the bell is me and not the horn itself

I'll post back with initial reactions once it arrives, probably Friday.

Well I'm very impressed with 'pierrejazz' (Studio Saxes) customer service.
I ordered off eBay very early hours Wednesday morning and the sax was delivered Thursday :w00t:

I did email Peter to see if I could change delivery address but he said it had already been shipped. Arrived home to find he had left a msg on the ansaphone to that effect as well, that's what I call customer service 8)

I am impressed with UPS as well. Left a note for them asking for delivery to a neighbour, fully expecting them to decline, but no, the sax was waiting at my neighbour's when I got home.

Like the bag  , sax looks very saxy in Phosphor-bronze, action is much lighter than my existing black, inexpensive Chinese tenor.

However all this happiness and excitment evaporated when I couldn't get either my Otto Link or Vandoren m/piece on the neck 😱

Both these pieces slipped easily onto the existing sax, but not the Walstein.

After application of cork grease and a fair bit of pressure I did manage to get the m/pieces on, I just hope this initial problem is down to new cork. Maybe I need to very slightly chamfer the front edge of the cork - advice please.

To those who have this tenor sax I ask a favour, can you measure how far onto the neck your m/piece goes please, it will give me a gauge of if mine is fitting correctly. Mine goes on about 13mm.

As well as the lighter action I find it blows more freely so I now have to adjust my embouchure

Sound hasn't improved so now I know for sure that's down to me

Mine also suffered from big cork - but it compresses

After a while I ended up with cork with a solid ridge in it. Impossible to push on when temperature changes required slight adjustments in m'piece position. I ended up tearing the cork.

A quick trip to the local repair shop gave a new cork - which was equally big and had to be sanded down. So its presumably "normal".

When sanding, careful application of the wife's best nail file will do the trick

Hi Tom,

How is your new Walstein/Bauhaus/Walstein-Bauhaus curved soprano sax? And has it got a high G key like the straight soprano sax? Maybe, when you have some time you can post a bit of a review?
Thanks.
Regards,
Greg Strange.
