Reeds Baritone Reed on Tenor.

Sometime ago read about someone using baritone reeds on tenors and bought a Fibracell to try it. Being somewhat dissatisfied with the present reeds on the RPC rollover mouthpiece, tried it again and still like it a week later. Think it loses a few of the higher harmonics but you must take care fitting as it only just fits. Anybody else here using reeds from a different pitch sax or another woodwind?

Whilst on about non cane reeds, Griff can you tell us about the carbon reed you bought in Frankfurt, please? Still using it or have you gone back to Fibracell?

I can use Bb soprano reeds on C-soprano sax. The Bb soprano reed + mpc works well C soprano. I cut them because they are longer. A bassplayer (sax) I know use bari reeds on bassax.

The bari reed is to big for a tenor mpc? Or do you file the sides?

I use a tenorsax mpc+reed on old Eb valve horn (trombone like). It has rotation valves so the thrills comes out perfect. Powerful thing. I made a mpc-pipe with cork to insert instead instead of the brass mpc. Good for overtone practising. High screaming notes!! Just for private use!!!

I've been told it's possible to put an alto mouthpiece on a trumpet too....

Yes, roughly the same but I guess more scream ...

I used to use a tenor reed on an alto. That works a treat as long as youre not fussy about really high notes. Also a baritone mouthpiece on a tenor sax makes a really loud saxophone. 😛

nachoman we just tried a alto sax mouthpiece on a trumpet and although it produces a nice enough tone all the notes are jumbled and octave changes are really hit and miss. The other way around was just awful, no real notes to speak of just a bee in a watering can type noise, I can do science, me. 😛

The carbon reeds I bought in frankfurk are from Harry Hartmann

I still use them when I play with the soul band and theyre still doin fine.

The only wholly successful reed swapping examples that have worked in my experience are:
1. Soprano sax reeds for SOME B flat clarinets.
2. Bass Clarinet for Tenor sax.
3. B flat tenor sax for C-Melody (Tenor MP or C-Melody MP).
4. Baritone reed AND mouthpiece for Bass sax.
5. Large bore Alto sax MP and reed for C-Melody.

Most other combinations tend to do funky things with certain areas of the range, intonation etc.

Oldgit - you are in FINE company. It was Charlie Parker himself that always used tenor reeds on his alto. He did used to trim them down a bit, but then those old guys always did that. I've also got some amazing results with bari reeds on a tenor.

-mind you, Parker usually played a number 4 or 5 Rico (allegedly), Lungs the size of an elephant! and he was mad, and alone.

Trim them down? That takes skill. They just about fit the RPC without any sheenanigans.

JULES, more care in future please. old git is two words and lower case. Get it wrong again and I shall be forced to kill you, mad and alone. >:)

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
