Andy Sheppard Masterclass at Crowborough

Thanks to sax.co.uk for putting this on....

Andy was very down to earth, amusing and a pleasure to listen to in terms of his playing and advice. His sound was very 'him', on any of the saxes he played (his own and other Mauriat models). They all sounded great.

Oh, and yet another guy who swears by a certain 'Top Tones' book 😉

Thanks Nachoman for your help with the soprano mouthpiece on the same day also.

And very impressive at the circular breathing, too.

Thanks again to sax.co.uk. I'm pretty sure they'll be getting at least one sale of a Mariat tenor on the back of it.

So, Nachoman, who's on for the next one?

Yup. An excellent evening. I could have listened to his anecdotes all night.

I was especially heartened to discover that he recommended telly and vodka as excellent practice tools 😛

Well I didn't make to Crowborough in the end but did go to John Myalls. There was less than 20 people there so it was like a private session in your own lounge.

Andy was great with some interesting tips on practice and amusing anecdotes. I ended up going to dinner with him and the guys from Myalls and Mauriat - great Ti curry and thoroughly pleasant evening.

Andy has a new album 'in the making' for Spring 2009.

A big thanks to all at John Myalls. Great evening.

Next one's mid-November with a Classical sax player from Chicago called Otis Murphy who's been involved with designing the Yamaha 875EX (can't believe that being called Otis Murphy and coming form Chicago, he's not a blues man...!).
good to see you folks on Monday, lets all get back to our overtone excercises!

Interesting you should say that- we filmed Andy Sheppard for just that reason... the guy did it wasn't sure how well it came out, or indeed if it was useable.. but that thought had struck us too (plus we'd have to get the OK from the man himself)

Here goes.... In my opinion, and through my experience at least -

Overtone exercises improve your use/efficiency of the embouchure & sense of pitch. These in turn can help when it comes to altissimo and multiphonics. However, perhaps more importantly...

As with long tones, your core sound can strengthen by the concentration of the pitching of the overtones, which help the one thing we're all after - a great and individual tone.

Overtone exercises allow you to realise the different pressure your embouchure and diaphragm provide to the different tones and registers.

Hope some of this makes sense....???
