Thankyou 🙂 .....yes I totally agree my first one was awful lol! I'm still not happy with it but I think it's gonna take a lot more work - also I find I get very tense and play badly when I know I'm being recorded (you know what's coming next) ......That's my excuse and Im sticking to it!! >:)

Nice versions by both of you's.Good to see the this months ballad is picking up steam.Nice to see hear you's.
 
Really enjoying listening to all the recordings this month. I've been sitting here with a coffee and the sun pouring through the window for about half an hour listening to you all, thank you. This tune is really growing on me and I'm even getting some inspiration to have a go myself.

Your recording is good IMO - doesn't need reverb; I prefer it 'clean'. I put way too much (or applied it poorly) on my 2nd attempt in retrospect.

You're very kind - thank you :thumb: (although it's a Tenor by the way - mind I did mainly stay up the top end - I suppose because the head is there)

Mind you I don't even know how to apply the reverb! :confused:

Thank you guys for your encouragement and support for me and BOTM....
Just been going through and listening to everyone ... I think we have some sensitive (musical wise) players here :crying: capturing the mood of the tune.... Which is very interesting, where not only do we have to play the melody correctly and maybe a little impro to make it interesting ... but for a ballad is is how it is expressed that creates that mood that stirs our emotions... Well done everyone:welldone
 
Just back from 2 weeks in the foggy Azores and see this month's BOTM has been lively. Have managed to listen to quite a few of the great posted versions this morning (struggling with SoundCloud refusing to play a couple of them). Some really good jobs done with what looks and sounds a challenging piece.

I'd love to have a go at it (whilst fearing my intonation issues at the top end of the tenor). What's final consensus of opinion on the dots on Wikifonia? Have people found them good enough to go with?

I'll PM Chris. Any other nice backing tracks discovered?

Hi Profusia

I`m still trying to improve on my version but it`s like 2 pieces to me still with the 1st part being an exercise in intonation and the 2nd part imagination. The weird thing is now that I can play it I`ve not yet bettered my original improv ( Not for the want of trying but I`m not cutting and pasting No Way) So I`ll leave it then come back to it in a day or 2.

Re Wiki and BT I found that all that the wiki sheet needed was some note length changes to fall in with Wayne`s example at the beginning of the thread and I have of course been using Chris`s great backing track at the original Tempo.

Firstly, a big thanks to Chris for his generous supply of backing tracks. Ballad of the Month would be a bleaker place without him. :thumb:

Secondly a big thanks to Davey for finding challenging Ballads. And on that...

...every now and then there is a challenge from which you just can't walk away. This month ballad is a such one for me. A ballad, seems easy enough on the paper, yet I just don't get it. This variation of jazz music is well out of my comfort zone, and I have a hard time understanding it.

Playing the noes one by one ought to be easy enough but that's not telling the musical story of Virgo. It would be like understanding "The Old Man And The Sea" by reading it letter by letter. We don't do that. We read words. And to get a grasp of the meaning, we read sentences and paragraphs.

This is where I'm lost. I can't hear the sentences and paragraphs in the music. Mathematically it should be easy enough. 4 bars to the sentence and 8 bars to the paragraph and Bob's your uncle. I just don't hear that in the music.

Maybe it's a question of listen to this kind of music more often.

Rune, great version and thanks about the backings..I think with tunes that don't have a vocal line it can become hard to get a feel for what is being put across with the melody and overall tune. You still managed to turn in a very good version though.:thumb:
