Re: "My one and only love" 13/06

Davey . I liked the 1st One better, much more romantic to me. The 2nd one was also very good ( a lot more 21st century and commercial) but just that for me I thought the 1st one summed the number up.

AlanT LOL at getting in quick with a post from "the other place" and why not? when it`s of this calabre. I like your vintage tone and your attack. Truth is that I have to confess that i never knew this song to play and it`s great to hear as many different takes.

Cheers for taking a listen. But again i'm not wanting to know which is better. There 2 complete different sounds/feel/key and track versions.Just knowing you enjoyed is enough.

Clivey - What runs! Very expressive as well. I really enjoyed your take.

Davey - Always love to hear what you bring and this was no exception. Normally I think six minutes is too long but I coulda listened another six!

Chris - Although I would have liked the sax a little higher in the mix I agree with everyone that the sound you are bringing is getting better all the time, nice take.

We did this one last year at some point (fall I believe) on the 'other forum' and this was what I posted then: https://soundcloud.com/the-a-train-1/my-one-and-only-love

May give it another spin here with a different mp/reed

Very old school smokey tenor vibe.Thought I was in the 1950's there.Very cool.

Alrighty, here's my go at this nifty ballad :mrcool
Needs quite a bit of spit 'n polish and I'll probably try and give it a go again in few weeks (with my fingers better acquainted with the melody and my ear better tuned to the changes):

Thanks,

Re: "My one and only love" 13/06

Davey. a couple of great takes as always. For me the first one was the best listen, just my opinion, both good though..

Chris..

Yea the 1st 1 in that key sits better. The theme really sings out on them palm key notes.Cheers dude.

Re: "My one and only love" 13/06

Thanks Chris, just another 4-and-something minutes of documented practice… 😉

Good effort Bud and a nice Alto tone as usual. These BT`s can sometimes feel like they go on forever and I sometimes lack the imagination or technique to vary the improvisation. I suppose trying just to shoehorn a solo in between chorus`s is pretty unimaginative but can be preferable to just repeating when I run out of good ideas. Still it`s a nice song to learn and I`m also looking forwards to having the thing completely under the mitts.:welldone

Re: "My one and only love" 13/06

Thanks Clivey, I appreciate the listen. 🙂
Yeah, I definitely ran out ideas after around the 3:30 mark - I should've just played the last 8 or so bars the head. Boring but more palatable!

Re: "My one and only love" 13/06

I love love love this tune. It was one of my dad's favourites. I've enjoyed listening to all of your recordings this morning whilst I should have been skinning the bloody cat for Gary Burton's improv course.

You all inspire me so much and I'm definitely going to have a go at this after this online course finishes this week.

Re: "My one and only love" 13/06

I'm still working this one up. It feels so familiar. I keep forgeting I can't play it yet. It's difficult not to go off on one, forgetting that you're playing a beautiful song and making it about the saxophone and the player. I think less is more with this one. The tune itself is quite clever and the chord progressions are a work of art in themselves. It's coming but I keep drifting off into other songs at the moment. Concentrate

and definatly agree it is a well worked out melody, so sweet

Re: "My one and only love" 13/06

Had another play around with this tune, this is one with no piano. But uses Guitar, Bass and Drums. Also it's shorter, it opens with the A section then one full chorus then ends with the A section. So there isn't a lot of original melody..

Chris..
nice using alterative backing instruments, maybe my ears are tricking me but the tone sounds more muffled here than say your satin doll, recording difference maybe? but that aside it is a nice chilled version, and i do like the guitar for the chords idea.
maybe i can steal a copy of that backing track ;}

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
