Yanagisawa Altos

Hmm, hankering after a vintage horn? Not me. I've got vintage Buescher Sop and Tenor, and a 1917 Conn Alto. None of them are anything like as good as my Yani T992 in any respect, including depth of tone. Dunno if it's the bronze, the metal pad reflectors or the heavy duty construction, but the sound has all the depth and body I could ever want. Still screams witha berg duckbill on if I want, though.

www.saxophones.co.uk have a couple for sale at the moment.

If I remember correctly, click on the old saxes link when you enter the web site.

I believe the prices were on the lower end of Pete's post. And with cases etc.

Yanagisawa horns are the closest modern saxes I've found that I like nearly as much as my Selmer Paris horn. They are a bit more free-blowing than the Selmers, but lack some of the darkness of tone that Selmer offers. They are certainly darker and less free-blowing than Yamaha. It's all a matter of personal preference. To me, I felt sort of lost between the two styles when I was playing, I like a horn to be really dark or really bright, and it just wasn't doing it for me by that criteria. However, if I were looking for a compromise between tone and the level of free-blowing, a Yanagisawa would be my choice.

There is NO substitute for actually trying a bunch of horns side by side.
