Vandoren Jumbo Java

I used to have both and didn't notice any difference in ease of playing. Vast difference in sound and perceived loudness.

Hello Chris, yes your assumptions are correct, it's a bit like a straw and a drainpipe, there is actually more resistance from a high baffle mpc, however, it's easier to play because it needs less air.

Plus it may well seem louder, my Jumbo Java for the tenor is very cutting and loud, although it will purr too. Some months ago, when I was thinking about a metal mpc for tenor I was recommended a Jumbo Java as a cheaper alternative (by someone in this very room) and yes, you may find that is the case, as I did.

Cheers, Bob

Just out of interest, what roughly is the difference in sound and which is the loud one?

cheers,

Bob

Thanks for the replies, although I have to admit to being perhaps more than a little confused about the whole mouthpiece thing.

Spike, I was thinking about what you say about the straw and drain pipe thing which makes sense but I then had a thought, if the tip opening is the same for both regardless of the baffle then surely that dictates the volume of air that passes through, which would seem to contradict my original assumption and favour what Pete was saying about the ease of playing being similar between the two pieces.

All the best,

Chris

Hi Chris,
I recently went to work on my high baffle mouthpiece, taking away some of the baffle and enlarging the chamber, without making any change to the actual tip opening, I did it over a longer period gradually removing a little at a time, I noticed after every modification that the piece required more air than before. I don't really know why this should be because as you say the tip opening remains the same, however I suspect that air speed may be playing a role in the equation.
