I like Bechet's style on soprano but it is very difficult to imitate without the vibrato sounding corny and out of control and the tuning going all over the place.

And here is the proof, playing along with a Dixie style backing track I made with Band in a Box:

I found it slightly eerie, but the music made up for it.

I bought a piano backing track from StandardsTrax.com that included the verse as well as the chorus. Having shifted the pitch to concert G minor I then recorded it on tenor.

I found a PhD thesis online which said that Bechet used diaphragm rather than jaw vibrato. However he did it, it seems well under control and highly personal.

I think the other element is his use of portamento, which we usually associate with string players in early C20th until mid 30 or so.

@Tenor Viol Sometimes I have to google your posts, and learn something when I do. Imagine how sophisticated I'll sound when I drop portamento into the discussion at the pub. I thought it was furniture. 😉

(An aside for Colin - portamento was 'fashionable' as a way of playing especially int he first part of the C20th. Early recordings of say Elgar cello concerto it's very obvious. Nowadays, excessive portamento is regarded as OTT and a bit vulgar, so it tends to be restrained where it occurs. I just wish excessive use of unnecessary vibrato would also drop out of fashion... This is a modern recording of the Elgar - which has a little portamento, especially in the opening few minutes, but it's minor compared to the 1920s or 30s.
