SOTM SOTM February 2022 - Work Song

Warning. Not genius at work. 😉

Listen to Work Song by Colin the Bear on #SoundCloud

Came down this morning to get a white wash out of the washer. Red object lurking amongst my band shirts. 🙁
Turned out to be e reed holder with two alto reeds in it. Phew! Relief. They looked very clean and undamaged. This recording was made using one. Plays very well. Better than it did before. Have I found a new way of refreshing old reeds? :confused2:

Thanks for that. There’s definitely life in that alto still. :sax:

My bassoon teacher told me that reeds can be rejuvinated by soaking them in peroxide bleach (though I‘m not sure I would want to put them in my mouth afterwards). An ultrasound cleaner works too. I suspect it’s just a matter of getting rid of the gunk that has accumulated in the reed.

Apologies for the time it took me to give feedback. February is a bear.

Hey, first, in case anyone is not up to speed on this, I'm BayviewSax at the other place. That name was because of my address, but everybody assumed I was from San Fran (I'm East Coast). So, when I moved, I changed to something associated with my current town (aka Carriage Town). 😉

mrpeebee - Hey bud, with all due respect, the Hal Leonard chart is really helpful on the articulation of those Gs (our key) on the head -- they should be legato to setup the bopish feel of the rest of the head. But man, once you got into the improv, my hat is off (and frankly, I'm aroused!) 😀. Man! You tore this up!!!! Particularly around 2:40, your use of space was epic, culminating in that gutty semi-shriek at 2:55! YES! DIG! I could listen to you play this all day! MORE, please!

guidocreo - I'm going to reiterate my opening remarks to mrpeebee. Again, though, once the improv starts in, I really appreciated what you did and where it went. You seemed to lock into a series of phrases that sort of coasted over the rhythm. If you'd not committed, it might not have worked, but you did and it does! Dig!

Guenne - Man! What can I say? I want pajamas with your image -- this ROCKED! Your tone, your time, ALL of it! Perfect! I would pay money to hear this and be very satisfied. In fact, wasn't until you laid out that I realized there wasn't a full band. KILLIN'!

I dug my Mark VII tenor for sound, but LOATHED the keywork (Irish curse! Small hands!). Love your tag ending. A local(ish) musician who performed for many years with Herb Pomeroy's band explained a disagreement in his trio. "Ryan thinks it should be played up, like Cannonball. I always heard it as [singing] "Ka-CHUNK! [pause, slowly] Da-da-doo-duh, daaah, dah-da-dah-DUH! [pause] Da-da-DOO-duh DA-dah-da-duh [pause] Da-da-doo-duh...." On my end, I always heard CB's version, but after hearing Jim [Howe, the bassist in question] describe this, I fell in with a mix of the two, starting his way, morphing to CB (as you tagged it on the outro). Nice!

Jmoen3 - Man, no lie, this is your most cohesive outing I've heard to date. Feels like you just grabbed hold and went for it, and I LIKE it! Clearly, you had a feel for this tune. #theGrowthContinues

sax panther - see comments to mrpeebee and guidocreo. Your's is closer, but there should be almost a lag on those first two notes. It goes relaxed-to-pushed. As with both of them, though, you put the seatbelt on and took off once the improv started. I'll echo the comments on tone -- very full and even.

At a clinic many years back, a pro (whose name I shall leave out because, frankly, he's a punk) was endorsing wet storage (peroxide and water). The next summer I went to Amsterdam and had an epiphany: Most of that city is on stilts, and they don't rot because they are never exposed to surface air. I tried his method and had mold issues. I settled on whiskey and have never turned back. I used to go through a box of reeds about every 5 weeks. Now they will last better than a year. #wetStorageFTW

Long time no see my Alto. 🙂

I love the slightly more robust sound of my Reference 54 compared to the more "cultivated" sound of my silver Mark VII.
These are nuances of course 🙂
What is more noticeable is that the Ref is a pain to play in the lower register compared to the Mark VII (still more on low C and B). I had a conversation at SOTW I think with @Steve Neff on that topic as there are many players out there with the same problem. You have to be very precise and you have to have a good reed.

For those who refuse to watch me playing 🙂

Hope you like it.
Have a nice weekend!
Positively rocks! You lucky dog to have a MKVII in silver plate. I have always wanted that or an early SA80 in silver plate and engraved but now I hardly play alto, so it wouldn't seem justified anymore.

I love Work Song. Benny Golson is truly one of the greatest jazz composers to walk the planet.

I had a little bit of a tinker with the arrangement after watching the Jamie Anderson (Get Your Sax Together) collaboration video.
Baby steps! 🙂

I enjoyed that!
Having the three saxes worked well.

My personal preference would be for an even more gritty approach, but that isn’t meant as a criticism.
