Thanks for posting. We have a great thread going here. lot of constructive comments. Everybody is just interested in music and getting better with their improvs.🙂

@Colin the Bear - nice swinger you put here, in keeping with your overall style, it sits well like this. yes there was a couple of minor changes to the head in bars 10 and 11 but you covered fine and adapted it also Nice use of beefing up the head on the saxes.
impro - the first chorus on Baritone was nice and laid back outlining the key signature well, pentatonic feel to it, then nice to see you used the blues scale to jump straight into the 2nd chorus and outlined it throughout with a more rugged feel, also unexpected scat singing, very bluesy feel and slotted in fine with the genre.
Overall a nice version, very 'you' and very vintage 50's feel to it in my opinion, which is not a bad thing at all and for the record the vibrato is heading in the right direction, less is more as they say, as we all know bad habits take time to iron out, and nothing is EVER meant personal when I address this issue i am only being constructive about it as it WILL enhance your playing overall, and you will get there i am sure.

I thought this was a definite step up, I can hear you've really put some work into this with Bari & Tenor playing together and or seperately, my personal preference was the interchange of one sax at a time worked better than the duo saxes.
I was actually thinking as I practised last night on Doxy, I'd have a go at singing, and it was great to hear your powerfull scat singing, you really let rip their.....most enjoyable, I'd say do more of that.
Which programmes are you using to mix these soundclouds and other set up like mic's etc.

I don't want lessons Ian. I'm done studying.

Alto and Baritone in unison an octave apart seemed to work. The alto was lacking something in the solo, so I left it out. No tenor reeds at the moment so I sang it lol. It sits well on the tenor too. I've kept the file so I may stick some on when the reeds arrive. Funny that I've never enjoyed Mr Rollins playing. It might be time to have a look at some of his dots as this one is fun to play. I looked up what doxy means. Very appropriate.

Just a couple of hours spare this afternoon. Printed the dots, played it into audacity and added a little reverb. No fancy mixing just multi track recording. One for the backing track, one for alto, one for baritone and one for voice then export it as a wav and upload to soundcloud.

Ta for this, I'm also using audacity, any particular reason you export as a wav file?
I use MP3 to upload to Soundcloud.

I've been experimenting with Gverb and have not ungraded to the latest version of audacity because there messing with Gverb.

What's your setting for adding a little reverb? (if you don't mid me asking?)

Same as when you asked last time. I use the Kjaerhouse classic reverb for audacity. It has lots of presets to pick from. I use small hall.

I love how you play the melody and how you start the improvisation so naturally and groovy. You have lots of great bluesy phrases that work very well here. Some of the notes in the high octaves are a bit too squeaky for my taste, but I still think this is one of my favorite versions posted here and plan to listen to it again for some inspiration.

Also fully agree about the squeky high notes, but I can give some background on that. The old La Voz medium reed I used in this recording (I think I play it now for about 5 months) is almost gone. It even is splitted at the tip, but I still like the sound in the normal register and hardly have enough playing time to break in a new reed. The higher notes (actually the low altissimo notes) are not as strong and well speaking with this old reed compared to a good and new fresh reed, but I actually like that these notes sound a bit squeky 🙂. I love Texas Tenor playing and people like Arnett Cobb and Illinois Jacquet are also known to play (sometimes) squeky notes in the upper register, just as an effect. It's a part of that style. Only big difference is that they sound much better then I do 🙂.

@Bb thanks. Really enjoying the 10M. It suits me down to the ground, but the octave mech has seized up. Must be all that fast fingering. Lol. Will be seeing the tech at the end of the week, so back to the YAS 32 for the moment. If you get the chance to blow a 10M don't pass it up, it might change your life🙂

I found an old tenor reed lurking at the bottom of the case. A little soaking and clipping and scraping and it's not too bad. I added the tenor to the track list and muted that shouting track , then it seemed to be begging for a full set so I added the sop to the mix.

I did a quick one on Tenor after work this evening.

Tried to make it a little more interesting this time, but it still feels like the whole 5 minutes.
Tried also to build on the solo at times and vary the rhythm here and there to lessen the monotony.
Not sure how succesful I was though.

I reckon you did a good job with it Nick. The Aebersolds rope you into a course of (peebee style) self-flagellation with the number of choruses you have to negotiate.
Didn't seem like 5 to me...more like 10 🙂
Colin: A well-rounded outing and although I usually steer clear of 'scat', yours was well executed. A reminder that singing out the solo is a good way of getting it into your system.
