Impro of the month
I reckon you did a good job with it Nick. The Aebersolds rope you into a course of (peebee style) self-flagellation with the number of choruses you have to negotiate.
Didn't seem like 5 to me...more like 10 🙂
Colin: A well-rounded outing and although I usually steer clear of 'scat', yours was well executed. A reminder that singing out the solo is a good way of getting it into your system.
PeeBee no need to comment on your superlative efforts once again
BTW I think I may have racked up the required number of posts to be able to post a link...

A very raunchy, gutsy version, nice to hear this side of saxophone playing used on Doxy to bring it to life. You know your blues well and a nice degree of confidence in your style which is always a good
thing to have as it will mean you will "go for it" more in you improvisations in general, very good indeed. I also like the way you play around with the melody and made little personalised adaptations with some rhytmical and tonal variations.

I look forward to having a change Ian, will rec a take at the end of the week when I have one of my newly aquired Conn tenors to play. Also hope to get some constructive pointers from yourself, and of course the comments from the other guys.
that's great, looking forward to hearing it on your new set up.

I found a used tenor reed lurking at the bottom of the case. A little soaking, clipping and scraping and it blows. I added the tenor and muted that shouting track. It was just missing the sop for the full set.

ladies and gents I present the CtB quartet. This does mean I'll be passing the hat round four times heheheheh

same comments as mentioned as before and the tenor solo is nailing the blues no problem with a big band style to it and i think adding the tenor has really fattened out the sound, comes across like a little big band, nice one.

Hey thanks for the positive vibes chaps. Yeah Nick K.C.! in my dreams hehe.
I have to confess though that this is a tune I play all the time in my 'day' job.
I only discovered the Dan Greenblatt (hence DG in the heading) backing lurking in my copy of 'The Blues Scales' and it made a refreshing (and short) change to riff over.
Some excellent examples already...looking forward to further takes.
cheers, Mark.

Great version Mark, with a tone very much suited for a bluesy number, nice one:thumb:

Chris..

For those who have got the blues scale on Doxy under the fingers now maybe move on a step and have a go at out lining the passing chords and adding them to the blues scale that you have got to grips with, this will add another dimension and give extra idea's to pluck from when going around the jazz choruses but if you feel it is a little tricky then you always got your blues scale to fall back on, hence a good reason to internalise your blues scale and for those who are still getting to grips with the blues scale then just keep at it, as in improvisation timing is very important as i state here now there is no hurry or any need to play catch up as this is not a race, it is just an exercise to understand and outline the importance of the blues scale and how it influences most jazz improvisation.

Hey how did I miss this one? Enjoyed tremendously Kobi. pop goes the weasel eh?
Nice flow of fresh ideas...move over peebee 🙂
cheers, Mark.
Thanks King Casey, you are very kind. I am actually in retrospect quite critical of this recording of mine. It is a mix from many takes and although it does include some quotes and ideas that I really like, I feel it doesn't flow well and that some of my sentences are too similar in rhythm and notes, so it sounds as if I don't have much to say... I need to focus more on how I develop the improvisation story and make it interesting, as well as how to spice it with ideas from other jazz vocabulary. Any ideas?

I hope to record another version, trying to implement some of the great feedback and ideas I got here.

@Kobi - try outlining and playing with the passing chords in the piece, eg on tenor starting chords of C then passing chords of Bb7 in bar 1 then A7 in bar 2 etc etc, as well as the blues scale, this will give it extra dimension and more for you to think about.

Hi Kobi. I'll defer to Ian's post as it's so easy to see the track you've negotiated by having a glance back.
'Doxy' has been in my sights from very early.
The goal for me is to take those chord tones and try to make phrases out them.(inadvertently using passing tones)
You would not believe the tally of how many times I've tried to play this tune.
Once you adopt a tune like this and get it down, then it becomes transferable to other numbers in your repertoire.
Also bear in mind that you are never going to be happy with your recordings, but others will see the nuggets of wisdom.
cheers, Mark.

Thanks for this Ian,
I'm well aware I haven't posted up a Doxy improv here yet, but I have been working out on Doxy, the Blues scale and Chords and really started an honest attempt at acquiring language, for me my memory of learning a phrase or lick, seems to be the blocking point. As soon as I can sing it (the starting rhythm) then I'm away!
I have 4 or 5, that I can recall and have started to mix em up a bit.
Yesterday I had a lightbulb moment, when I realized the chord structure in numbers form, really made it easier to remember and play the tune.
I'm spending allot of time grinding into my mind (without reading anything) the sounds of the various chords & the relevant blues scale. I'm trying to keep my place in the tune as I play through the chords playing say all 7ths or all 3rds with sometimes altering the rhythm slightly.
I know this is not posting up what I'm learning in audio form, but I am shifting myself into new territory, so many thanks for all your inputs Guys!

@ visionari1 - as long as YOU are getting something positive out of this there is no need to even post, i am just happy my ramblings make sense to you and you can better your playing from it.

I'm sorry I've not had time to listen to tunes already posted on this thread as I've been away all week. I'll try to have a listen over the next few days.
I finally had a chance to run through this yesterday, so a quick recording which really is a work in progress!

@Di in France - thanks for posting, nice to see and i can 'feel' your playing when you improvise, as it comes across particularly in your higher notes you play cos you are adding a different dynamic touch there, nice to see you kept it swing along and added a bit of the blues scale and melody into the improvisation and some chromatic runs too.
