Impro of the month
Thanks Ian. I'm really not happy with it and it was a real struggle to get to the end, but as a first go, it gives me something to work on!
as with most of us we are never happy with what we play/record but to others they know it sounds fine and to me you did fine here.

I've been getting a lot from this thread, thank you. I haven't posted anything - but hope to do so a bit further down the line when I'm doing a bit better. As it is, I was delighted simply to make it to the end of the Aebersold playalong at the same time as the backing musicians. The recordings are all great, it's inspiring to hear the variety. There's been a lot to take away and learn from, thank you.

Thank you kindly for them words and i am just happy enough that you are getting something out of this. To get through the piece is great, well done but do not feel you need to post a version, just as long as you understand and it helps is more than enough.
regards,
Ian

@B Flat - well that was certainly a fun way to take this tune, and as said before you have got that blues nailed, nice one!

It has been an interesting primary month here, glad to see people have taken the time to post versions and get involved and i do understand it can be a little time consuming but given time i hope my little tips and pointers can help in some way.
Even the players who have not posted a version and have contacted me are very appreciated and i was very glad i could of given a few pointers for you to understand the blues scale a little better in this exercise.
next month it will be an exercise on using different rhythms and dynamics but adding a little syncopation or off the beat feel in impovisation, i will post the new tune title in the coming days.
Ian

Big thanks to Ian for all the time he has put into this thread.
And for the very much appreciated advice and guidance he has given.
I'm looking forward to next month and continuing to learn more about improvisation techniques.
Thanks again.
Nick.

I hope we can still post after the end of the month. With other commitments I still haven't had chance to have a go at this yet. Hopefully I can get to listen to all the takes and borrow some ideas sometime this week. Thanks Ian :welldone:welldone

feel free to post anytime in any month, no problem at all, it is not restricted to any one month, open all hours i say.
thanks.

Hi Guys Yup, I'm still lurking in the background.

Nothing posted up, but I do consider it a good month, I've learned heaps.

Still have today to post something by the end of the month!

I've been getting into amassing my own jazz language, i.e. copying sections/riffs that I like from Doxy versions and being able to play them freely. This has been quite a challenge, it seems to take quite a long time for my memory to grasp the actual starting feel of a riff, but I am making good progress It's doing wonders for my ear training. It's fun copying a riff from Ian, or Miles or Sonny Rollins.

Being able to sing it has also been tough.....I'm trying to extend my riffs by playing then singing, then playing what I've just sang and figuring out why they sound OK...ie is it in the correct scale or what are the intervals that sound good.
Still figuring out how to save these (my Jazz language) riffs into a form that I can revisit easily really refresh my memory and also mix and match them.

I'm thinking of writing them out long hand in several keys (or all keys) and practing these, should I be naming them as relevant to the tune...to the player...or to the chord.....to the key of the tune......or some other way??? Any advice here Guys!

I copy a short section I like with audacity save it to an MP3, then I can open that with Transcribe, so I can write in the notes and the beats and loop and or slowdown sections. I have about 6 riffs that I can rotate around from memory and also mixing in some relevant blues riffs. I play around with say two riffs and mix the first half of one with the second half of another, or vice versa.

So although...so far not posted anything...but....I have been at it...in the woodshed!

So thanks Ian and others for your inputs this month!

@Jim - I am glad you have gained something from this way of thinking, and woodshed is a great place to put those ideas into play.
As for remembering riffs try to think of them in number form and that way you can transfer the system to all keys, for example, if you have a riff in the key of C (lets say) and the notes in the riff are "d e g Bflat c" then think of it in relation to the key in numbers so in the key of C, D=2 e=3 g=5 Bflat=flat7 c=root(1) or 2,3,5,flat7,1 then that way it can be taken to any key.

Ta Ian....Hmmm...I had been using the numbers then forgot all about it!

Back on the case.

I have found once I have the rhythm/feel of the riff...its quite easy to move to another key.

I presume to use this riff in the new key in say Doxy, I pick a part of the tune that is relevant,

i.e. taking your example above. in key of C

so in the key of C, D=2 e=3 g=5 Bflat=flat7 c=root(1) or 2,3,5,flat7,1

I could choose a part of the tune which is in say ii/v/i (this don't look right...I'm meaning 2/5/1)
If I've transposed the lick to all keys, which will work?.......so how do I know which key will work over say the 2/5/1.....I suppose the ear is the best judge!

I think another huge penny has just dropped.....with the numbers I have to think (match) the sound to the number......this way the sound connecting to the number makes the link to the new key....I need to say the numbers as I practise...ie the same numbers, but a different key

I remember years ago how at a Jazz workshop a very good player could say a tune in the note names, then say them in a different key also naming the notes...it was like he was on automatic pilot...this is a version of your numbers system..same numbers just different starting note name! Maybe he was visualising the staff?

Thanks once again!

+1 on the thanks! It's been timely for me and has worked well with my renewed focus on scales. I have sung Doxy everywhere in the last fortnight - in the car, on the bike, baking in the kitchen, walking the school run - it's been great to spend some time really looking at and listening to a tune. Thank you for setting it all up, and thank you to everyone who posted such inspiring versions.

@Jim - Just the fact you said you have learnt something this month is great and underlines how these forums can be used for the good of playing, and not just for the banter etc etc. I am really happy for you as i know it is hard and takes time to develop improvisation and varied idea's.
on listening to your Doxy it was clear and good that you just kept going and trying different idea's with the blues scale incorporated throughout, you did your own thing on the "head" which was fine and made it personal to you, you kept it swinging and from my own one on one time spent with you i can hear since then you have got more of a grip on the whole impro thing and you are playing with authority in your sound (no fear) and with a more solid structure, great stuff, i am so happy or you.
Ian
ps

i like the little extra notes at the end 🙂
