sax stands

Hi is it just me that does not trust there sax stand i just feel there too easy to tip over???? And also is it ok to lie your sax down on a cushion thanks Tom.

Don't know about cushions but similar problem of accessibility vs safety from dropping / knocking over, etc. exists for guitars. But behind me I've got five hanging on the wall, any one of which I can lift down and play straight away without the hassle of unpacking from bags or cases. There ought to be a kind of wall mounting sax rack but I haven't yet seen one. Maybe someone else knows of such because if I can't find one myself I'll make one! I haven't dropped my sax yet but my wife's clarinet went for a tumble a couple of nights back ... fortunately only the mp cover fell apart and was later super-glued back together again. On the wall's always safest I find!

It depends on your stand,
I have had standard 'black tube and foam padded' constructions which didn't over concern me if a bit fiddly.
But now I have saxrax and although they aren't cheap I think they are worth the extra especially if you add to your tally of sax''s.
I also lay the m on cushions wnen I'm being lazy.

I've had a couple over the years that I've really not trusted. The best, by far that I've ever come across is the Saxrax one. As well as being very stable, the way they hold the sax means it doesn't affect the stability if you put it in wonky. Their construction also means one stand can fit different sized saxes - I use the same one for tenors, altos and C-mel.

Mike, they also make ones for wall mounting.

I find mine ok and it's an ordinary bog standard one. Mine is in our main kitchen/breakfast room and has kids and dogs around it and so far so good. I also pop mine in with the laundry basket sometimes as I play downstairs in our basement washroom and it doesn't seem to mind 😛

stands have always worried me from the stability point of view. Surely Saxrax are the most stable thing about, but I've found my Aureum has served me pretty well over the last couple of years- I just get a bit obsessive about where I plonk it down on stage (great stand in that it packs down really small and flat).

I didnt like the standard round tube ones for a baritone so I bought a square box section "Hercules" one that is really stable and was only ?25. It great.

I have a K & M which I think is German, and is very stable.

I've got a K & M stand too, Roger. A possible advantage is the availablitiy of fittings for other instruments, mine has the flute spike.

I swear when I first placed the ST-8 in it, I heard, "For you, the falls are over, Hanson." in a Germanic accent.

I have a Saxxy stand. As it is very close to the ground it is pretty stable and when you are on the go, the whole thing packs up very nicely, goes into it's little felt bag and neatly tucks away inside the bell of your sax! The price is something else though.

saxrax are the best i've used...but i have noticed in the last year the saxrax's don't have the two feet, only one and the other just like a peg leg.. i don't thing they look anywhere as near as stable as the 3 i have, alto tenor and bari. for the sop i find a trumpet stand a safer platform than any of the sop stands or pegs i've tried.
