Had a jolly down to Stuart and Linda at Woodwind exchange last Thursday with a mate of mine.

I've always been interested to try a Runyon mouthpiece so I asked if they had one. Stuart fiddled about in his tenor draw and popped one up. No idea which model it was, so i took it into a room and blew it for a while. It was an excellent piece. Just what I was looking for brighter and more focussed. I hummed and hawed for a bit but decided it was worth it so I bought it.

I had a look on the site and from the look of it I'm pretty sure it's a Custom #12

Quite a change from my Tone Edge

Does anyone have any views, opinions about these pieces.?

I've got one as well, same model in bright red plastic! It has a spoiler as well. To be honest, although it's a pretty good piece, it doesn't sparkle for me, either with or without spoiler. Good value for the price, though.

Yet another example of how different pieces sound different when blown by different players. I bet if you and I both blew the same piece, with the same reed on an identical horn it would sound completely different. That's why recommendations can only go so far - what any player needs to do is try it out for themselves.

Now the Runyon Smoothbore Metal on my bari - that's a real beast!

spoilers are great fun but very limited in scope- they're more like a special effect than a real moutphiece modificaiton. The only time i've got much mileage out of the one on the old smoothbore was when I was in the studio- played all the section riffs without spoiler and then stuck it in for a couple of solo overdubs- to make it sound more extreme and also to make me sound like a different sax

What do the spoilers do? Make your mpc louder and brighter? I've heard good things about Runyons (there are many models, I believe) but I don't know if I could go for a red one.

Spoilers are a little plastic baffle and a metal spring 'tongue' which goes into the mouthpiece- very loud and very bright. Almost like a guitarist's overdrive pedal...
