Does anyone else find that Rovner ligs are sensitive to set up?

I use a dark 1RL on a Mauriat 67R. The Rovner is about 5 months old so pretty well stretched in. I find that sometimes my tone is really buzzy or gritty (bit like excess water but it's not) and others it is that nice round dark sound you get from a PM. Trouble is it's not consistent. I thought it might be the PM with some running in leaks (quite new) but I have tried the same Rico Royal 2.5/Rovner/Soloist C* set up with my Trevor James and it is just the same.
What I think is the answer is that the single screw on the Rovner draws the two brass bars together but ( possibly because of the mouthpiece shape) it draws the front, ie the nearest side to my lip, closer than the back by just a fraction. Keeping the distance equal - by pinching a finger in the front as I tighten it - seems to give me a grit/buzzy free tone. Anyone else experienced this?

Noticed that you set up the lig at the extreme end of the table, wonder if that might have something to do with it. I use Rovvy Light and you don't seem to get that problem on my Hanson ST, so try different positions.

BTW As you've got the stroppy Big White, can I have my explosive underwater spear gun back? Want to get that whale in the Wandle.

You could be right Bill. I have sorted out a few dud reeds in the process so now I know I have one that blows, I will experiment more. Thanks.

You can have your harpoon back and when you've cleaned up the Wandle we can both go and do the Effra - my mate and I claim to be the only people who ever sailed on it in a tin bath (we were aged about ten) .

hi YC
I have a leather lig. Not a Rovner or any name, but i guess it works the same. A piece of leather, with two brass bars at the ends, joined by a screw, with a metal piece on the other side with a bit of felty material in the middle to hold the reed. One thing I do find is that on my Rico mpc, the thing is hard to tighten up with the finder screw. I tighten as tight as i can with finger and thumb, and still there is some slight movement in the reed. I know there is no need to tighten the reed overly, but it needs to be just a little tighter, it's a bit off putting when the reed starts moving in your mouth while playing. Also, the lig has to be clamping the reed in just the right place to avoid squeaks. In fact i have gone off the leather lig, and have gone back to me basic metal lig. Yet to try the elastic band though 🙂

If you check the Rovner website it has a sizing guide to match ligature sizes with different mouthpieces - quite important to get an accurate fit. I generally prefer the Rovner ligatures with the metal by the reed - on Dark and particularly Light and EVO-5.

Still prefer the Francois Louis Basic Ligature however 😛

Hi chaps
Pete - that's how the Rovner works so it's either that or something similar. It should tighten OK though, mine does, so I wonder if, like, Tom says, you have the wrong size for the mpc.
Tom - it says it's OK on the box (which unusually I have kept!) and those nice people at J Myall's selected it for me, but I'll look at the site anyway. I'm always open to trying things like the Francois Louis, but I suspect that I will be told that I have spent quite enough of mine and Mrs YCs money on the lovely Mauriat for the moment!

I've never really had a problem with a Rovner lig, I found them easy to set up. I used them on HR pieces but now I play on a metal piece with its own metal lig I haven't been using them lately. I can't say I've noticed too much difference between the light and dark styles, as far as I'm concerned if it holds the reed in place it's doing it's job really.

Another satisfied customer!

Do try oiling the metal parts of the Lig, and cleaning the screw fitting first, Young Col. Let me know when your birthday is and I'll get you an FL Basic lig - only ?17 or so.

Kind regards

Thanks all for the advice.
Tom - thanks for the kind offer: you could end up with everyone PMing their birthday to you!I'll fiddle with the Rovner for the time being as I don't get my free bus pass for another few months yet!
