Please guide me to Soprano player

Not very ballad-y, John Coltrane when he's not playing tenor. Also Lol Coxhill, Andy 'Thunderclap' Newman.

Maybe more to your taste would be Johnny Hodges who on his earlier recordings played quite a bit of soprano (I believe he played with, or learned from Sidney Bechet) before concentrating on alto.

Didn't he play keyboards Bob?

He did indeed, but also played saxophones, mainly soprano and bass saxes; I've always had a soft spot for the Thunderclap Newman LP (their one and only) which contains a lot of saxophones used as a colour rather than a solo instrument - 3 sopranos in harmony feature on several tracks.

Some of my favourites, many of them with soprano as their second instrument:

Lucky Thompson, John Surman, Andy Sheppard, Michael Hashim, Jan Garbarek, Joe Temperley, Cannonball Adderley, Soprano Summit (Bob Wilber & Kenny Davern), Zoot Sims, Jim Galloway, Budd Johnson, Tommy Smith.

There are quite a few soprano players that I really don't like (mainly for their offensive tone and/or dodgy tuning), but they will remain nameless.

Rhys, I've never heard Cannonball playing soprano, can you point me towards some of it?

My LP copy of the album "Accent on Africa - The Cannonball Adderley Quintet" has a picture of CA on the cover playing soprano in some sand dunes, with his alto around his neck.

1968 recording date given, and on the sleeve notes it says:

NOTES CONCERNING THE INSTRUMENTATION:

On "Gunjah" and "Lehadima" the Selmer Soprano Saxophone
On "Ndolima" and "Khutsana" the S.M.L. Soprano Saxophone
On "Gumba Gumba" and "Hamba Nami" the Selmer Varitone
On "Khutsana" and "Marabi" and "Up and At It" the King Super 20 Alto Saxophone.

Have a look at this thread on SOTW:
http://www.saxontheweb.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=66343

Mentioned on the SOTW thread are the following tracks/albums featuring Cannonball on soprano:

"The Black Messiah" (1972)
"Syn-athesia" from "In New York" (1962)
"Country Preacher" on the title track

All the best

Rhys
