Hi to all, must say theres lot's of good advice and good feeling to all.I have some thing's to say on my new sax which is a Mauriat 66r tenor and what a horn she is.I have owned all the top 4 brand's and a few MK6's and must say that in my view the top horn's are all so good it's all about what suit's you best and what you like, BUT i took the chance on my 66r tenor and have never been more happy with a sax, still early day's but i just know that she is the 1.We have to face the fact that other nation's ,(far east)have caught up and in a few place's turn out great horn's,built with pride and are level or even better in some people's view's than the top name's,just look at the price now of a SELMER REF tenor horn new,it's getting crazy cash now not to mention MK6 price's.As mauriat say;GO FOR THE SOUND.and at a great price.Cheer's David. >.<

Hi David and welcome to the forum.

I totally agree with you - I like most of the Mauriats and love the New UL (unlacquered ) tenor - I'm fortunate enough to work at a shop that has a stock of P Mauriats.

no only do they sound fantastic they are fairly priced too.

I wont be flogging my Mk 6's or my Yanni just yet but I will more than likely get a Mariat as well!

I've tried the P. Mauriat tenor and love the sound. The only issue I have is that it cost a little more than the Yamaha 82Z I saw and the tone wasn't that much different. For a company that haven't been in business that long, I can't really justify paying the premium for it when Yamaha has been proven for many years.

I'm not biased towards Yamaha since I don't own one but when I play them back to back at the music store, the extra money don't justify purchasing it over a Yamaha, or even a Yani

However, if it works for you and you found the horn that give you the tone you want, then I'll definitely give you your props and don't forget - keep that music coming

Hi, you said it all there,it's what you like that matter's.Time's are changing fast in the sax world and there's so much more choice now, which is great for us.The french have a fight on there hand's these day's and the money side of thing's make's it worse, people should open there eye's to the new world and the new dawn of saxophone making.Better choice again for us so be brave and dont just think that Selmer etc are god ,there's new kid's on the block and there here to stay.As i said before the top brand's are all great horn's it's just the list is longer now.Go try the new kid's out and you will enjoy them for what they are,me and my P.Mauriat 66r are so happy it's got me that buzz again that went for so long .D :w00t:

True, I never saw it in that point of view and with the constant fluctuation of the US Dollar, more and more companies are making pro horns more attractive and durable.

I admit before I replied to you, my mind was set on a Selmer Mark VII, but now I not so sure. I would rather buy a new horn (Japanese, French, etc) that only need a good setup rather than another vintage horn for a cheaper price and pay extra to overhaul it.

However, my question for you is have you tried the Mauriat 76 and if so how do it compare to your 66R. I'm looking for a dark but smooth tone like Stanley Turrentine and a few of Sonny Rollins songs. I ended up selling one of my tenors because the edge was too much no matter what mouthpiece I used.

Let me know what your tone is like, the setup you use, and the artist sound you're after or can be compared to.

Again, my props to you for making see this issue in a different light.

Hi, yes i tried the 76 & the 66r side by side and there both great horn's ,76 is a heavy, well made with more of a close action of the key's to the sax body,it's more like they say, french compact Mk6'ish tone's which is great if that's what you want,PM,S have great fat bottom end's.The 66r is lighter in build to me,i love the feel you get with rolled tone hole's on it and the key placement suit's me more. Now the best bit is to come,WOW;what a full, creamy, loud ,sexy ,feeling sound you get,you can whisper down them bflat's and way back up,it can rock the house if need be.I try and think of Andy Sheppard's sound when i play and my 66r help's me get abit nearer it.I am a loud player at heart but with age i now strive for more the whole choice.I use a JODYJAZZ espx,la voz M.d

PS, I found i could push the 66r more and the tone would not break,it has a realy dark tone and you can bend and shape your sound with great ease.My last horn was a selmer 3 but i was wanting a warmer sound.I had a borgani pearl silver in the past that remind's me of my 66r but my PM is the most easy blower i have had and i had a few,6,s,yam,s,keils and yang,s.You can play for hour's and you feel great.Hope this help's,join the 66r club it's great. D 🙂

i had a look at your horn model on http://www.pmauriatmusic.com/PMXT-66R-mainpage.htm
man, that is one cool looking horn !!
heres a quote from the web site.......The PMXT-66R rolled tone hole tops the list however. It is a monster saxophone that plays so effortlessly that might be fooled into thinking you are a better player than you really are. My test model was a special order that did not have have a high F-sharp key To be honest this horn is so close a reference to my 1957 Selmer Mark VI that when I picked it up it felt like the horn I have been playing for 15 years. Because the key action and the ergonomics are comfortable, there us something oddly familiar about this tenor.

Go and get ya self a beast 66r tenor,i bet you would love it.I just got a new RICO METALITE M9 mouthpiece for ?15.00 off ebay,no harm trying at that price and wow, sound's great.Free postage aswell,i have spent so much over the year's on mp's and it go's to show.Well happy. :w00t:

I want to try a Berg larsen bronze 110/2 some time,i heard Andy sheppard play's that size?the search of mouthpiece and reed is never ending for us but as i have said i found the horn of my dream's,got mine from Pete scaddan of studiosaxophone's in wale's,top guy.Trying for the alto next but still begging to the wife.I not had an alto for about 8 year now and the buzz is back so i need, want, crave and will get one,oh yes.D

Never knew that- my Mauriat 66R (also horn of my dreams.... is it just me or does that sound really dodgy?) is equipped with a Berg Larsen Bronze Duckbill 115/2.. I've tried loads of other combos but always return to that mouthpiece plus Vandoren V16s. For me, at least, Bergs seem to really play to the strengths of Mauriats...

Good to see you back on line . Hope you had a good Holiday.

I ordered and received my Berg Larsen Last week. Her in-doors insists I wait till my Birthday in three weeks......

Duckbills are longer bodied, have a ridiculously long table and seem free-er blowing and a bit louder (apparently they're a copy of really old vintage models from the 1950s)- we've always considered the duckbill to be a bit more "rock & roll".. good pieces though

i find the otto link new york mouthpiece works well for me on my yamaha tenor so i bought one for my mauriat bari and im well pleased with it after a few failiures with other makes ! i think the harder bronze they use to make the mauriats needs a bigger chambered mouthpiece to get it to speak !

Here's my 66r i delacuered (only body & neck)She look's nice.

That does look very cool indeed, I'm probably too chicken ot break out the nitomorse on mine but I must say, I'm tempted (I've tried the mauriats that ship unlacquered and- you're quite right- it really does boost the sound)
