Joe Lovarno

In the interests of furthering my sax education I've set my magic tv box to record 2007 Brecon jazz festival on BBC4 tonight at 8.30. It lists the saxophonist Joe Lovarno who I've never heard of. Any good is he? Worth a look d'you think?

I wish I could get that channel out here in Bangkok. Joe Lovano is a modern great. He grew up sitting in with his dad 'Big T' and then paid his dues in the Woody Herman Big Band. This man lives and breathes jazz.

I saw him in the 90's when he was playing in the John Scofield Quartet. That quartet recorded several albums.

There is an interview on the Berkely website where he is addressing a group of saxophonists with some insightful advice.

Some may say that his playing is an acquired taste. It'll be interesting to hear what you think of his playing.

Thanks guys - I'm really looking forward to it now 🙂 . We nearly went to Brecon last year as it's only about an hours drive away and we often camp up that way but left it a bit late. Is it any good for casual observers with kids or is it a very "serious jazz" festival.

In my humble opinion, Joe Lovano is an acquired taste. Monster technique, but I am not so keen on his tone, and I feel that somewhere in there, the musicality element took a back seat to the technical wizardry. This is of course from my musically unsophisticated viewpoint so have a listen and see. Musically not everyone's cup of tea. Saxophonically, he is one of the top guys around.

Well Spike, in the interest of further educational knowledge, you could set a UK proxy server into your browser, thus 'appearing' to originate from the Beeb's cash bucket area....

I'm not an expert, but a search of 'proxy server' on youtube brings up a fountain of knowledge!! (takes about 1 minute to set up).

Well I watched this and rather enjoyed it. Having no knowledge of him at all - didn't even know he played tenor. Some of the bits they played were a tad busy for my taste but I could see the attraction and I liked his tone. The clips they showed were his own compositions so it was harder for me to listen as they were unfamiliar, I would of liked to have heard him play the odd standard just so I could get a handle on the tune.

Seems like a nice chap as well, as much as you can tell from a short interview. I think I must get a SAX hat as well, as this may make a difference to my sound, Joe had a couple of nice ones. 😉

Thanks for the advice Geoff, although I have had the same problem as Spike. I will look at UK proxy servers but am a bit unsure about doing this. Should I be?

Hi Josh

the actual setting up of a proxy is a piece of cake, of course it is entirely your choice... I do believe that amongst some more sinister uses, (hiding one's identify/location) a lot of guys in the US, that live in banned online gambling in their State, use it to fulfil the gambling itch!!

Sorry Spike, I don't where to start....so I'm not going to. I'll have to live with the fact that one of the down sides to living outside of the UK is not listening to certain podcasts. Call it bseing a chicken if you want - both are true!

We've gone well off topic for which I hereby apple-o-gize.
I'm a little reluctant to do a proxy bluff as it'll interfere with my other applications, however the upsides to living outside of the UK are the wine, the women, the songs, the food and the beer. You can also legally drive on the right hand side of the road.

I won't mention the Lovano spelling, I'm always getting into trouble.

But I'll recommend a great album - "Streams of Expression" it's a big work, or two really, almost symphonic jazz if you like.
Interesting may it be for some - he plays Francois Louis' polyphonic soprano known as the Aulochrome on a couple of the tracks. check it out.
