Tech/maintenance Jody Jazz Jet Tenor 7

Hi Forum,

I recently purchased a JJ Jet Tenor 7 and have been having difficulty playing it especially in the higher octaves. My old Jody Jazz HR 6* plays really well and upon inspection the Jet has a deeper cavity in the barrel as opposed to a straight line through the 6*.
Occasionally I get it right however this is not consistent and is frustrating to say the least.
My horn is a Yamaha TS100 and I am currently using Rico 2.5, 3 and 3.5 reeds. I have tried all those reeds with the new mouthpiece to no avail.
Has anyone had experience with the JJ Jet 7 and some possible advice?

This is what Jody says on his website:

"Due to the shorter facing curve on the Jet a softer reed than you might normally use could be appropriate. This is because the reed actually has less length in which to vibrate."

So you have a slightly wider open mouthpiece with a shorter facing. I'd suggest trying a softer reed. Give a 2 a try, maybe something like a Rico Jazz Select 2S. With a shorter facing curve, you might also want to experiment with how much of the piece you take into your mouth.

If your old mouthpiece plays really well, why did you replace it with the Jet?

Hi Jon,
Thanks for the reply. When I searched the website the Jet appealed to me as I was looking for alternative sound. I will try the softer reeds and see how that goes.

Old post. Does the shank measure 1 1/8 inch or much less? The original models had a shorter shank which was creating an intonation issue for some players. Jody corrected it but it took about a year to retool them.
