Like the soprano sax was not high enough, and not that I can do it on any sax, but is altissimo possible on soprano? At what note does it turn into an expensive, inaudible dog-whistle? 😉

Oops, I put this in saxophones and it should be in playing saxophones; it's been a long week so far.

Just a personal opinion I think altissimo should realistically be limited to alto and tenor.

I heard a sop player playing the extended register and it sounded a bit ragged, maybe that was just him though.

Courtney Pine is a master of it well he is at the lot ,seen him twice but last year he played a out door in the park gig as part of the catherine cookson festivel and it rained bad with the north sea blowing mental but i have never seen 1 man work so hard to get the people, most not jazz fan's jumping in the mud,his patter was class, then his playing, holy s+*%t he blew like a mad man, altissimo on the sop was screaming on his Rampone sop,he did a altissimo on his tenor, G4 i think with circular breathing that went on for about 3 minutes, and that's the truth,i was amazed and the best thing was the gig was free, check his cd's and there's some kicking dog whistles.

Never fancied soprano sax much myself. The way I look at it is: if 'Trane couldn't play one in tune, what chance have I got?

Peter

Ah, but then 'Trane didn't seem able to string a few notes together to make a tune, therefore we all have a chance so long as we don't obsess with technique but just knock out a song instead.

Cat pigeons amongst...let's go!!!

Why do you bother with the saxophone????! 8)

Good stuff - I laughed so much, I thought my pants would never dry!

Kind regards as always
Tom

Why do I bother with sax? 'Cos I'm obsessed that's why. In my life I have never enjoyed doing anything as much as I enjoy all the aspects of sax playing be it classical, jazz, indie, latin, blah, blah, etc.

A friend of mine, dead these last three years, introduced me to sax and jazz and little did he know at the time what he had done. I can only regret that it is so late in life that all this has come to me but I intend to make the most of it. I play in three bands and play three different types of music -- jazz/blues, classical and indie -- and I'm loving it.

Yes, I know... a serious answer to a fun comment, so to lighten up again....

There is a man on a boat that is in a shipwreck. The boat crashes on a jungle island and the man is greeted by natives. In the distance, he hears the sound of drums. He asks what the drums are for and the chief answers, "The drums must not stop." The man is forced to stay the night in the natives village. All through the night, the drums keep on going so he got no sleep at all during the night. He got up in the morning and went to the chief again, begging him to know why the drums couldn't stop. The chief answered, "Because, when drum solo stop, sax solo start."

Cheers
