Nice Chris. Perhaps just my imagination, but it had a distinct French Cafe atmosphere about it, Film Noir, or something, I could imagine Aznavour singing.🙂

BM, try to forget everything and think in terms of ABCB. They are just tonal "spots". Ideally you should have a longer BT; start it from half way and try to understand where you are.

Yes, i've made some progress over the last couple of years in hearing my way through the progression. More work to be done there, though. Things are much more problematic when I pick up the sax. I suppose that should tell me that what I need is a more direct connection between what I hear and what I play next. Does that mean I need to develop a sense of absolute pitch (right now I have almost none)? I hope not, it sounds difficult.

It can be difficult to get past a problem. The more you struggle the harder it becomes. If something isn't working a different approach is needed.

Perhaps thinking of it as four seperate pieces may help. Prepare four, four bar phrases and join them up. Maybe try a phrase with a long note at the end for the place you're having trouble. You can do your mental prep holding a note before you get there and then launch into the change. After doing this a few times, the bit you're having trouble with is the bit you know and are comfortable with and the easier bits can be worked on. Don't try to be too clever at first. Get something simple that works and embelish it later. Use theory to work out what you're going to play. When playing just think of the next note or phrase. It's hard to think and play.

All very sensible sugggestions. Thanks. I'm finding it really intersting to read all the somewhat different viewpoints on this.

#Jim, the more I play this one the more ways I find to play around with it, it's a good progression to start with. As for your imagination hearing things, perhaps in the gaps when I couldn't think of what to play next Joking aside thanks for the comments..
#Rob, I think I used the space to listen and work out what was going on. That's why there was a lot of it🙂. Leaving space is something my tutor wants me to keep working on. Thanks for the comments.

That reminds me of a joke. My old teacher told me, who was Russian, but lived in France with his French wife. The French waiter was asking a Brit tourist in Paris, how he would like his steak cooked, well done, rare etc. the Brit tourist replied. Just pull off the horns and bring it here.
PS. I hasten to add, he wasn't talking about my eating habits, just the French sense of humour🙂

Great melodic structuring indeed. It makes the odd wrong note to be forgiven (even that F#).
I am tempted to suggest you to add two extra feet (= 0.666666 yard) between you and the microphone. It seems the proximity effect adds presence but also high frequencies I am not sure you want.

The use of the word 'Pruple' is a standing joke here on the Cafe. It is in reference to the way a member spelled it, when talking about a sax.

This must be from the old days. Now we evolved and we would mention the "pruple lable" saxophones. Mistakes must be done in full.

If it helps your self esteem, many studios I visited, wrongly positioned the microphone saying "we'll equalized it later".
(try digging the 5k Hz and add a nice reverb, BTW)
